Wha?

I dont think he has ever been mediocre.

On their later work his playing is a little more subdued, but he offers some great lines on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, One Hot Minute and Californication... Though the last one has him taking a break from very funky bass playing... And he goes for something more subtle, but it still demands your attention.

He wasn't given very much to do on By The Way however.

that's what i mean, californication was a good album it doesnt have great bass though, very good but nothing to really scream about, nothing really sticks out for me on by the way and they seem to be going in the same direction on their new album from the sounds of their new single. so, i agree, he wasnt mediocore before but he is now.

I thought the bass on Around The World was pretty sweet?

You should pick up One Hot Minute if you haven't heard it, i wouldn't say it is one of their best albums in overall musical quality but it is one of Fleas best bass albums, if not his best bass album period.
