Default Damaged Vox, Better Music?

So in the fall out from Nu-Metal, Avenge Seven Fold seems to have picked up the reigns where, i don't know say Korn, left off. I don't know too much about this band so I checked out Bat Country and while it was missing a real hook to pull it through, it was relativly decent.

I went back and checked out some older stuff and my general impression was that it was just who can scream the loudest and longest and the throw in chromatic speed solos underneath. They weren't all like this but you get my drift.

So the question is, for anyone who knows them better than myself, did they become better after whats-his-faces throat surgery or do you think its a general improvement? Have there been other bands that seemed to improve after an event like this?
