If I'm looking to start listening to some metal, which bands should I check out first? I dig Zeppelin quite a bit, so should I proceed to Black Sabbath? I listen to a variety of other genres of music, expect metal, so I'd like to venture into it a bit. Anything like instrumental metal bands? Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc bands?
Thanks. |

Post-metal generally isn't that great, but bands like Agalloch and Opeth frequently abandon lyrical work for compositional efforts. Bear in mind that I am by no means a metalhead. I recommend:
Opeth - Morningrise Black Sabbath - Paranoid Agalloch - The Mantle Meshuggah - obZen Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast Slayer - Reign in Blood Takes care of progressive, black, death, power and thrash metal.

Judas Priest for instance does not irritate me and apparently neither does Black Sabbath- their earlier stuff. I'm going to see about Iron Maiden next. |

I like all sorts of Metal but I just can't keep up with the endless genres. Why not call bands such as Agalloch (who are awesome) Ambient Metal?
