Lemmy absolutely hates the term Heavy Metal attributed to his band and they are a Rock N Roll band after all is said is done.

Wow, I did some extra research online and you're right. I wonder why a lot of places still say that they are a metal band? A band should be classified as it wants to be classified even if others may have a different idea of things.

Like AC/DC they`re often classified as a metal band. Largely for their huge impact on the genre. Firstly, being part of the NWOBHM which really put metal on the map. Secondly, they were highly influential on the speed and thrash metal movements.

Like AC/DC they`re a hard rock outfit.

I've always considered them metal, regardless of Lemmy's preference. I mean back when they started out metal was still very much a subgenre of rock so I think they can be called both really.

1970s style of heavy metal most notably represented by Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Motorhead (you could include Venom here, but everything they did was done by Motorhead except the explicit and repetitive occult imagery). Consequently, it embraced dark imagery, with Iron Maiden taking on occult topics, Motorhead wearing Iron Crosses (a symbol of the defeated National Socialist regime in Germany). Alone this would be cause enough to say metal was divergent from rock of the time.

I do find it odd that the actual singer and mainstay of the band states that they are not a Metal band but we can all decide otherwise.

Nobody argues the fact that AC/DC are not Metal in these arguments yet they share many traits with Motorhead.

Just because Motorhead have long hair and distorted riffs doesn't mean that they are metal to me at all.
