Matt Heafy is an accomplished guitarist. But I agree that his screaming was a bit, eh, painful to listen to. He's better now when he does scream, he's learned some things. But I prefer his clean vocals. I was a little let down with Vengeance Falls, but I blame David Draiman for that more than the band.

Here's a few metalcore bands I dig, some could even be considered death metal:

Caliban
Any Given Day
Amorphis (sort of progressive though)
Darkest Hour
dEMOTIONAL
Heart Of A Coward
Trivium
More Than A Thousand
My Dear Addiction
The Sorrow
The Unguided
Deceptic

First of all, Matt Heafy's screaming has always been awful. Dude has no feeling to his vocals. He's just going through the motions.

Secondly, Amorphis is in no way shape or form a metalcore band. I honestly have no earthly idea where you got that notion. They started out as a stone cold death metal band, and then transitioned to melodic death metal on their way to being a progressive metal band.

From their first album, if you don't believe me.

I'm not disagreeing with you about Matt. But in terms of whether I would rather hear his scream, or clean vocals. It'll always be the clean vocals I'd rather hear.

I don't know why I lumped the best band on my list as a metalcore band either. So I've got no explanation there. Or maybe if I had to guess, they weren't supposed to be on the list. Badass song by the way.

Same here. I'm no judge of singing ability, but he at least has some singing chops. With The Crusade and Shogun the band were clearly trying to break free of their metalcore shackles to an extent, and I was curious if they would continue that and evolve into a sort of metalcore trad/prog metal band with a unique style of their own. Unfortunately they pussed out, or just ran out of creative steam, and then went back to their safety zone with In Waves. Lost all interest after that.

Whatever, it's not like I don't have Protest the Hero to give me the same thing.

haha, well, fair enough. You wouldn't have liked the album after In Waves anyhow, Vengeance Falls. The singer for Disturbed produced the album and you can hear it in every song on the album. Why they ever let a guy in an inferior band produce an album for them, is something beyond me. I loved Shogun, probably my favorite album from Trivium. I think it displayed the same things you thought it did. But then In Waves came out, and it was a full stop, no growth. Vengeance Falls was the same deal.

I'm interested in the album they are allegedly self producing. I haven't read anything on if that was true, the self producing bit. But they should stop trying to fit a mold so they're always relevant. They were going to great places with Shogun. I want more of that, but with progression in their sound.

I've always been a scrooge when it comes to Protest The Hero. Something about them pisses me off.

Great band. I love that the singer isn't afraid to sound like a power metal vocalist, and the music is vastly more interesting than 99% of their "peers".

I think musically, Protest The Hero is really sound. It could be that I can't find a reason why I can't listen to them, so that's what makes me a scrooge about the band. I don't even know.

I could try getting over myself and just listen to them with an open mind, clear of judgement.

EDIT:

Getting the discography. Will be my listening material while at work tonight.

Sounds very interesting, I've been into metalcore for several months already. The bands I've had the chance to listen to are mostly Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying, other than that I still have many other bands around to spend more time listening to their songs and stuff.

I'm currently trying to cover all the material AILD released during their activity time. After that I'm looking forward to listening to other metalcore bands but I have a few bands in mind like Caliban or Darkest Hour, also Trivium and All That Remains seem to be very good bands but for what I've listened in some of their songs their vocalists don't do guturals that much and that's a negative for me, I dunno.

Your list looks very good, I'm actually gonna test a few songs of each band but what bands would you recommend me after finishing with As I Lay Dying?

Thanks for reading :)

You're big on really primal, guttural screams? Well. Demon Hunter has a lot of that, even their newer material. They have clean vocals too, so not sure you would care for that or not. And they are a Christian Metal band, so if you aren't big on listening to religious bands, let me know and I won't recommend them.

Pretty much any band on my list will have the screams you want, especially Caliban and The Unguided, Any Given Day, While She Sleeps, At The Gates, Amorphis (early material mainly), August Burns Red, Every Time I Die, Living Sacrifice, Soilwork, War Of Ages, Whitechapel...

The Batlord is a guy that will likely have more to recommend than I do. But I am pretty good at looking for what people are seeking.
