Hes a decent guitar player in my opinion, though in skill terms he wouldnt make the top 3000.

Hammett is sloppy as f*cking hell sometimes, and he has been known for excessive overuse of the wammy bar.
I'm not saying that Kirk is the best guitarist or anything but you can't say he's not good.
Also, In terms of songwriting, Metallica wrote far better songs than Nirvana ever did.

I'd say Hammett isn't that great. But Hetfield is very good. I like the rhythm work in Metallica, and as far as I know, Hetfield wrote all the rhythm and acoustic parts in Metallica and a chunk of Hammett's solos. Not to mention, Hammett had nothing to do with Kill 'Em All either. By the time you take out all the stuff that Mustaine, Hetfield and Burton wrote, I don't think Hammett wrote that much.

I might be wrong. But it is hard to tell, because credits are never very specific as to who wrote what. I haven't heard his stuff in Exodus though.

^very true. while kirk hammet may have quite a bit more technical skill than kurt cobain, cobain was appealing to a completely different audience. so the number of people that would say kurt cobain was a better guitarist, probably equal the number of people that would say that kirk hammet is the better guitarist.

personally, i think a lot of metal is quite recycled. this is not to say that grunge isnt, but i think that metal as a genre, is outplayed. there is so much of it that much of what is played, has been played a hundred times before.

Yeah, he had no input in Kill 'Em All which is an amazing album. I prefer Mustaine to Kirk. I agree that Het is very talented too.
