I still believe that real tone is in the fingers.
Scientifically (i guess), I would say this has to do with a number of things. Not so much HOW you play, but how your FINGERS play. Such as:
-The thickness of your fingers
-The thickness of your skin
-The texture of your skin
-The length of your finger (determining what part of your
finger plays which string)

Those are all superficial compared to the tone itself. Go to a guitar shop, try out a lot of guitars, you will find a lot of different tones depending on the model and brand. For example Strats have clearer, more "liquid" tones while SGs have a more thicker, funkier tone, and ES guitars have a more crisper, smoother tone.

Then why is it that two people can play the same guitar and still sound different? Even if they use the same techniques?

That has nothing to do with his point, his point is that no two guitarists sound exactly the same, and even if only some guitarists sound exactly the same, thats still enough to prove him wrong.

Actually no, I said that the greatest guitarists sound completely different from everyone else. Thats why they are great. Guys that all sound the same are never great. Maybe SOME guys can sound CLOSE, but not exactly. How do you explain that?

Jimmi Hendrix. No question. Feel and inovation and natural raw talent. Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd in my opinion has the best feel of any guitarist in the galaxie. Jimmi comes very close. It's almost a tie. Kurt Cobain played guitar almost sarcasticly. I'm a huge Nirvana fan, you have no idea, but as a guitarist, he had a natural talent that was diffinatly unique and provided the right feel that he was trying to display, but techniclly I wouldn't but him in the same catagory as Jimmi Hendrix.

Also have to mention Kirk Hammit of Metallica. Check out the solo in the song Ride the Lightning, and you'll see why.

OMG! I almost forgot Slash from GnR. Slash rocks.

Kirk Hammit is a great example. He is a kinda "shred" guitarist, but most people can tell the difference between him and another "shred" guitarist.

Slash is awesome. But his guitar style owes a lot to the many original guitar gods of c*ck rock. Everyone from Page to Young to Nugent. But primarly Brad Whitford and Joe Perry.
