Is this some sort of Joke? You can like the death of music formally known as nirvanna if you want, but he sucked at guitar. I have a live recording of him playing heartbreaker (the zeppelin song not any of the 80s ones) live and he plays the solo and messes up constantly. His riffs are so simplistic they spawn Green Day and a variety of other bands that are so simple it kills anyone who doesn't wish to listen to a 1 4 5 (yeah yeah sometimes 1 4 5 4 or 1 4 5 1 4) chord progression over and over again. Niccilo Paganini played the guitar so even though I can't listen to him I trust that he was the best guitarist who ever liver as he was the best violinist who ever lived. As for people that I hear. Catchiest is Tom Morello. Fastest is MAB. Overall I would say Jimmy Page.

Nothing is wrong with being simple. But it sure as hell doesn't make you the greatest guitarist. If Johnny Ramone spawned Greenday (and a variety of other music) then why does it start essientially right after Nirvana. Green Day becomes popular about 1994 that's the exact year Nirvana ends. Of course Green Day is influenced by the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash and I'm sure many other Punk bands, but Nirvana popularized the ultra simple music.

If you ignore the likes of Motley Crue in the early 80s who were influenced by punk & glam rock and sold a few million albums.
