My choices:

Jimmy Page - he is very experimental and he can write great ballads as well great hard rock songs. He is talented on both electric (Since I've Been Loving You) and acoustic (Rain Song) and his playing on White Summer is excellent

Ritchie Blackmore - I can't believe no-one mentioned him. Just listen to the solo in Child In Time if you disagree.

Dave Gilmour - 5 words: Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Nuff said.

i think hendrix is more overrated than page imo. If your talking about guitarists, that is. As a musician, hendrix is probbably better, taking into consideration that he was the lead singer, songwriter, and that he played a right handed guitar when he was a lefty. However, if youre just talking about straight up guitar playing, jimmy page outdoes hendrix any day of the week. Page had more songs, better riffs, longer solos, etc. Correct me if i'm wrong but i have yet to hear a song by hendrix with an acoustic, however, page had a great number of acoustic songs that were totally amazing. black mountain side, bron-y-aur, babe im gonna leave you, etc. Page was so much more diverse in my opinion. I also prefer the tone of pages guitar too, but thats just my preference.

I think steve vai is probably the the best technical guitarist, but I like the sound of eric johnson, he has an awesome style. and then me...joke

And what does Pentatonic Scales have to do with anything?... Page uses pentatonics most of the time, so does Hendrix, Clapton, EVH, Gilmour and Berry... And i'll tell you why, because it sounds good, which is why its a common scale in many genres of music, and dispite what some of you might think, good music isnt defined by how technicaly dificult it is to play, but how it sounds, and thats all that matters, a guitarists job is to complement the music in the best way he or she can.

And if you think that Page is a one trick pony, you are wrong, and if you think that he only plays pentatonics and in 4/4 time, you are even wronger...Four Sticks is in 5/4, The Crunge is in 9/4 and Black Dog shifts between, 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4...You dont hear time sigs and tempo changes like those very often... So please do not speak of which you do not know.
Page's songwriting was ingenious. Ten years gone has 4 guitar parts, four sticks switches from 5/4, to 6/4, and back to 5/4, over the hills and far away starts with 4/4, switches to 9/8, followed by a measure of 7/8. Dazed and confused starts with 12/8 time, switches to 9/8 and then to 6/8. The ocean starts with 4/4 and switches back and forth between that And 7/8. Finally black dog starts in 4/4 and switches to 5/8 and back to 4/4. Another thing that page was amazing at was alternate guitar tunings. Kashmir especially is ingenious with the DADGAD tuning, as is black mountain side which is of the same tuning. If anyone says that pages playing is easy they are retarted, and lack musical knowledge. Its a hell of a lot easier to buy a tab book and have it all written out in front of you than to start from scratch. Page is the master of guitar.

I have a number of guitar influences, but no one single person can really claim the title of greatest guitarists.

heres my list:

clapton - blues
instramental guitar - vai or satch
shred - Michael Angelo Battio (fastest shredder in the world i think)
Rock - Saul Hudson (Slash)

Bull****!...He was already very popular before he died...Its also one of the things that suposedly driven him to commit suicide in the first place.
