I can't believe it took until page 17 before somebody mentioned Gary Moore. And somebody who didn't even get a mention is Jeff Healey......blind since the age of 1 due to eye cancer and plays his Stratocaster across his lap. Do yourself a favour and get some of his material.

Snooks Eaglin has a similar story, yet he bangs out traditional American blues and not commercial blues rock. I do like Healy. The guy has more talent in his little finger than I do in my whole body, but Snooks is amazing. There is no greatest guitarist. There are so many elements to being a good guitarist. SOUND: DJANGO REINHARDT/ROBERT JOHNSON/HANK MARVIN INNOVATION:JIMI HENDRIX/STEVE VAI EXPRESSION: DAVID GILMOUR/RY COODER TECHNICAL BRILLIANCE:YNGWIE MALSTEEM/EDDIE VAN HALEN these are just a few morsels thrown in front of a baying crowd! The real answer is: THE BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD IS YOUR FAVOURITE.

as far as the original question - hendrix. cobain was innovating a new sound with his words and ideas, whereas jimi was innovating a new sound with his guitar. i mean compare playing 'machine gun' to playing 'smells like teen spirit'.
as far as keith urban - although it isnt that relevant, he was born in new zealand and living in australia. besides that he has crossed into this moderately common place with all the other big country stars in a blend between POP with hints of country. now he is a talented guitarist, but honestly as far as country goes brad paisley is better. my opinion might be biased because i only listen to country i REALLY like, which is somewhat few and far between. |
