I don't know if the bands were required to be good, which wouldn't make sense becuase people tend not to forget them. I'll list whatever:

Harvey Danger
God Lives Under Water
Citizen King
Squirrel Nut Zippers
Possum Dixon

Yeah I was a child of late 90's college radio. It was Brown Universtiy, Damn Ivy Leauge intellectuals.

third eye blind

mainly 90's bands because thats when i grew up (duh). but most of them just kinda dropped off the face of the earth.

i remember them as well.
thats because aside from the last two you said, alot of 90's HOT bands were one hit wonders and just died away.. and i know Blind Melon were a wicket cool band but they were also a one hit wonder band sorry..

oh yea another band to add i don't even remember there band name anywho they sing "sex and candy" haha for some reason i loved that song..

oh and more forgotten one hit wonders

Marcy Playground was the band that made it.

Joan Osborne and Live are pretty much forgotten from what I can tell.

That was marcy playground.

How did STP get on this list, who doesn't recall them, they had one of the greatest songs of the 90's.

And SemiSonic should be remembered more ofr "Closing time" and "Singing to me in my sleep" than "smile" becuase that song was t-rash.
