liner notes?
 

from conversations i've had both online and in real life, this seems to be a generational thing but.....

do you read liner notes? do you check on occasion who happens to produce a particular piece on a cd? do you read lyrics? note song writers?

me? i come from the 'gotta have them' faction. part of the allure of music buying for me is knowing as much as i possibly can about a particular band, artist, producer. i find treasures hidden in musician lineups...artists i never would have discovered had i not read liner notes. one of the reasons i've never taken to burning music from cyberland is the lack of liner notes. i like the artwork.

Liner notes are awesome. I usually read the liner notes and lyrics while I listen to the record for the first time. That's one thing that is completely lost when you download an album off the internet. You don't get that new-record feeling that you get when you get back from the record store and pop in the CD.

Yeah, I agree. I always read the liner notes when I get a new CD. I don't download albums from the internet either. It's just not the same as having the actual cd.

Same here. It's always cool to read. I especially like reading the bands thank you's. It helps me find new bands

Liner notes are good if they're funny or particularly interesting.

Personally, I prefer inserts that unfold into posters or something rather than just a list of people whose collective c0cks they had to blow to get a record deal.

yeah, actually, thats how i discover about a third of the bands i listen to. reading the thank-yous. i always end up looking at the lyrics when i get a new cd, (ive memorized the lyrics to almost every song that i have on cd) and when i get bored with that i always read the thank you notes just to entertain myself.

i like having the lyrics there so you don't end up singing along in your car going "scuse me while i kiss this guy" instead of kissin the sky... lol

and i think the thank you's give you alot of insight into WHO the band is, what and who inspires them, where the music comes from... and yeah... new bands and sometimes a renewed interest in an old one.

they're such a large window into not only the artists but some of the folks behind the scene too. mostly the musicians is what draws me to liner notes.

reading that dave mason, founding member of traffic and an artist who's own music i've bought over thirty years, played the acoustic twelve string on hendrix's 'all along the watchtower' is a gas to me.....then, digging a bit here in cyberville and finding out they hung out for quite a period of time together makes it all the more interesting.

liner notes that are funny are great too i agree cardboard. reading lowell george's rambling expose in the liner notes of little feat's 'sailin shoes' release was great fun while bonged hit into oblivion.

recently, i've read things like "do the fair thing. play this record loud!" it all makes me grin knowingly....damn right. rock! we really do need it every night.

lyrics? sheesh. and i've not even touched on those. liner notes. yep. gotta' have um.
