You say that like it's a bad thing. One of the things I hate so much about metal bands these days is the production. They overproduce their albums so that everything becomes crystal clear and robotic. Metal is supposed to sound a little ugly, if not a whole lot ugly. That's where the evil is.

I don't think there is anything wrong with good production. Good production and a clean, crisp sound doesn't necessarily mean something is overproduced. Different bands have different flavors so to speak, and the lo-fi aesthetic lends itself better to some bands more than others. Even within genres one way is better than the other in terms of production. I think a band like Meshuggah benefits a lot from good production values, as seen in their most recent album (although I haven't hear KOLOSS yet). Lamb of God's sound lends itself better to the more raw sound (the first two albums). You can still sound gritty and ugly with good production, but this should depend on the artist's ability to do so rather than on how murky the production is.

1) the second half of the song was interesting, but the first half was godawful. According to my math, this means the song was - at best - mediocre. 2)I've nothing against high production values in and of themselves, but I certainly don't view it as an asset of such value that it will elevate a **** band to a quality one.

Same problem with a lot of death metal bands. I'm sorry Necrophagist, but you blow. Sure, there are other reason's why they suck, but the crystal clear production is one good reason. Quote:

I'm not saying you've got to be trve kvlt and sound like you recorded in a garbage can, but leave some fuzz for god's sake! I say this while listening to Among the Living. Certainly not the most necro of albums, but the production is still not the sanitized, robot sound of Killswitch Engage or Meshuggah.
