Once I stopped being a fuck and crying about how I "missed the days of old", I came to appreciate this album a lot more. It's a very good SOULFUL album. A few dud tracks, but overall pretty outstanding.

Violent & Funky 05-23-2010 09:32 PM

They can't get any funkier... can they? There's even a solid amount of bass in there. I like it... :)

sidewinder 05-24-2010 02:18 PM

I am liking the new album so far, I've played it twice. Early standouts for me are "Next Girl", "Too Afraid to Love You", "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Unknown Brother".

Totally agree with you on the last part of that song, it's pretty awesome. I was playing it on the way to work this morning and I assumed the next track had started...checked my iPod to see the name of it and turns out it was still "Tighten Up". Hopefully the rest of the track will grow on me. I don't hate it it's just not as good as the last minute.

Oh and that "Next Girl" video is pretty awesome.

TheCunningStunt 06-04-2010 06:35 PM

Would it be fair to say that the Black Keys (especially with their last couple of albums) have really come into their own and took over from what Kings Of Leon were doing, a respectable blues rock band? (Even though KOL were more southern but w.e)

They seem to be going in the same path as KOL but in a good way. KOL released Because of the Times which was a little more mainstream (Brothers)

I just hope the Black Keys don't go in the same way as KOL in the sense that they don't release a bland and boring album because they're yet to do that, if they get success by doing exactly what they are then fair play.

Violent & Funky 06-04-2010 11:41 PM

I don't know, Attack & Release was pretty bland. I'd rather listen to Only by the Night...

I thought Attack & Release upped the ante, and IMO I think Brothers is the best thing they've done to date.

pourmeanother 06-05-2010 10:00 AM

I still rate Brothers and Attack&Release pretty low on the spectrum, but I've at least grown to appreciate them. I think the debate still starts with Thickfreakness and Rubber Factory, with mad respekt for the debut. Those albums and that style are what brought me in, which is why I've had to make adjustments to dig this new ****; However, I can see why people would dig the new albums more if there first major taste of TBKs was around 08-10.

Violent & Funky 06-05-2010 01:34 PM

Rubber Factory pwns noobs...

TheCunningStunt 06-05-2010 01:41 PM

Rubber Factory is the only Black Keys album I don't own, thanks V&F, you reminded me I had some completing to do. :D

It's just finished downloading.

sidewinder 06-17-2010 05:56 PM

I know I'm not the only one that thinks of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun" every time I put on the new Black Keys album...

TheCunningStunt 06-17-2010 05:58 PM

^

I never noticed any T-Rex in Brothers :(

sidewinder 06-17-2010 06:04 PM

Why the frown? Because it sounds like a rip-off, or because you don't like T. Rex? I don't mind the similarity really, perhaps an homage.

I love T-Rex, I wished I noticed more T-Rex influence if anything. But there's a fine line between influence and ripping off. I think Brothers is their strongest record to date though, really pleased with it. I was thinking it might disappoint before it came out but I'm really glad it hasn't.

Violent & Funky 06-18-2010 01:14 AM

Have you heard Rubber Factory yet?

I have, that was the only Black Keys album I was missing. Although I must confess I've listened to it once or twice.. So I don't have a strong opinion on it but it sounded pretty good.

You sent it 3 times, I thought you were spamming up the forum.

It must've been an innocent mistake as you've deleted two of them.

Apologies, favourite Keys album?

eBay and StubHub. You're welcome.

I mean- you drop the ball, you gotta pay your dues I think.

Four score and a year and a half ago I hesitated to buy my tickets to see TBKs, and had to pay $80 for a $30 ticket. Learned my lesson AND saw an amazing show worth that inflated price.

Good luck with your search.

dswood 09-28-2010 04:12 PM

A buddy of mine sat me down the other day and showed me a video for Tighten Up. I've been listening through the rest of Brothers and am liking this band a lot.

I'm almost embarrassed I hadn't heard of them before that - they're pretty much right up my alley, style-wise.

sleepy jack 12-24-2010 03:40 PM

I don't really like the Black Keys but I thought this was way cool and have been listening to it this morning: Free Black Keys / Big Boi Remix Album « the needle drop

This is ridiculously awesome. Thanks!

Anybody else been hearing 'Tighten Up' on the radio? They're a little late to the party, aren't they?

It was funny reading a bunch of comments online about how TBKs sold out for making an album with Big Boi. I chuckled at the cluelessness.

Well it was just now named iTunes album of the year, so... more people suddenly care.

Even if they did... how would that be selling out haha?

I didn't hear it on the radio until maybe November, but I reckon that's prolly just us Midwestern simpletons hearin' things a bit later than y'all out East is all...

EveryDayNormalGuy 12-26-2010 05:08 PM

That Big Boi vs. The Black Keys is insane.
Very good find.

Violent & Funky 02-14-2011 02:22 AM

I love the Keys, but LOL @ Brothers winning the Grammy for alternative album of the year...

It's just not one of their best, and especially not one of the best releases of the year, as much as they deserve some credit...

TheBig3 02-15-2011 09:12 AM

Oh I thought you meant they shouldn't be in that category. Yeah the Grammy's don't make good choices. Thats been the case for a long time.

I'm also pretty sure that one of the Albums (Blueprint 3) was not even released in 2010. So who knows.

pourmeanother 02-15-2011 12:33 PM

Congrats are due for the wins. Maybe not their best material, but clearly their biggest mainstream success and has given them notoriety. Interesting to see Arcade Fire pull album of the year, but then lose out to The Black Keys for best alt album- call it the Colbert bump?

Also- music video for "Howlin' For You"....

MisterFuzzyHead 02-15-2011 08:00 PM

I'm gonna go google'em

Mr November 02-16-2011 04:21 PM

The Black Keys are good because they're very base. Nothing makes you feel cooler than driving around listening to that blues rock sound.

saint.ives 02-19-2011 03:05 PM

The Black Keys are in my naughty book at the moment.
I went to Big Day Out pretty much especially to see them, they were bigger in my head than Tool or Ramstein or even Grinderman; and they bailed pretty much last minute because they were tired.

They were replaced by an Ausie guy called Paul Dempsey, and I love Dempsey I really do... but Dempsey ain't no Black Keys that's for sure.

:(

I hear ya. It's got to be painful to hear them sight "fatigue" while they are releasing music videos and making so many public appearances. Granted, they have been touring continuously for a long time now, but if they couldn't handle it why schedule it?

No he isn't and I am perfectly fine with that! IActually much prefer his music to the Black Keys...

Violent & Funky 02-28-2011 07:17 PM

And now they add U.S. dates to their tour. If I was from Australia I'd be PISSED...
