Well, that was a proper bump. Not only was the old reply from 2005, but the thread is a real stinker too. Good job Yanira

Metallica may not always be symphonic metal

Metallica - No Leaf Clover (Video) - YouTube

but I'd say that song is

The reason Boo Boo calls everyone else amateurs up there is that there are some conflicting ideas on what constitutes symphonic rock in this thread. Playing contemporary music with a symphony orchestra may not qualify according to the general consensus on what symph rock is.

Symphonic rock can be described as combining of progressive rock with classical music traditions.[2] Some artists perform rock arrangements of themes from classical music or compose original pieces in classical composition structures. Additionally, they may play with the accompaniment of a symphony, orchestra or use a synthesiser or mellotron to emulate orchestral instruments.
Symphonic rock is not an orchestral rendition of hit rock and pop songs by classical orchestras; these can be considered "classical arrangements of contemporary music", though these are at times marketed as symphonic rock by various outlets. Using a symphony on a song or album does not qualify the work to be symphonic rock. It must meet the quality of being considered progressive rock in addition to the qualities listed for being symphonic.
In other words, bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, King Crimson and so on are considered symphonic rock, yet these have hardly been mentioned at all thus far.

^ Nice clip!
From the same year, this was another early experiment marrying rock and classical music. It`s a pretty faithful copy of a classical piece, but played by a rock band, so I think it might just fit within your Wiki definition. But you`re right, the prog rock bands you mentioned are the real proponents of symphonic rock, along with The Moodies, of course :-
