I seriously disagree, sure playing in different styles is impressive, but some styles are simply more dificult to master than others, of course every genre requires talent of some kind, but jazz just requires more precison and complexity, especialy in the drumming, you may not notice it because some jazz drummers dont let it all come out like say Keith Moon or John Bonham, but what they do is MUCH harder to copy than you think.
Anyone can dabble in different styles for maybe one song, anyone can learn a few blues licks here, a few jazz licks there, maybe one flamenco lick, but that dosent make you versatile. Not saying Carey isnt versatile, but hopefuly you will get my point, Cobham is a master of his respected genre, some consider him the best jazz drummer around. |
