I've always been a big fan of John Bonham.

Regarding pretentiousness in prog rock lyrics.... thats what makes prog so much fun! and when they do get it right lyrically, it turns out absolutely amazing.

I wouldn't say it makes it fun. More.. Funny.

I laugh at Dream Theater's lyrics all of the time. Everything about them is wayyy too polished. It should wreak of Lysol.

But i get what you mean. It's a distinctive trait.

I guess funny would have described it better... my friends and I used to spend many a humorous momwent contemplatinng some of the overwrought lyrics prog has given us...

As far as drummers go, I'm sticking with Danny Carey

ehhh..word?

I can see the perspective you come from. When I listen to them...I wouldn't have it any other way. But when I think of one of my 'typical' friends listening to them. The idea is immediately turned sour by their likely strange looks they will give me.

Rush is an aquired taste. I am so glad they wasted little to no time ranting about "Jessies Girl" and so on.

Ug... Who made this poll? Not a single person this list with the exception of Neal Peart is good. And he's a tad overrated.

I think we need more people like this:

Dave Grohl as "best" drummer, naw. He is good, but not THAT good to be ranked amonst people like John Bonham, Neil Pert or others... His drumming always suited the music he played, he hit hard and what not, but I do not think he is a master or anything.

I think most of the "best" drummers would be found in metal and jazz. Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Bill Ward, Flo Mournier, Pete Sandoval are some of my favorite for metal drummers.

I can not pick a "best" though, since it is impossible.
