I think that Mason's role in Floyd was more foundational. Really, he never had a chance to explode, either on stage or in the studio, like Moon or Bonham. He was a solid drummer, and Floyd was, and will always be one of the greatest groups in rock history, but Mason, in my opinion, wasn't one of the greats. He was good, but not innovative. |

I think that Dave Gilmour once decribed it well... basically he said that The Floyd really weren't the very best musicians in their feild but what they did do was gel what they did together well when playing.... Mason's drumming was succint, and entirely suited to the music, it was precise, not virtuoso, but it fit the songs just perfectly and tastefully, as did Gilmours own guitar work....

Listening to Keith Moon on Live at Leeds is like an Octopus on a drum kit. Phenomenal. You can hear his energy.
Although, if I'm gonna call 'Best', I'd have to say Buddy Rich. Thomas Haake is also incredibly skilled, but I don't think he expresses it to his fullest. |
