you know......popular tradition says that Neil Pert is the best.........but.......ah i dunno. there are a lot of really good drummers out there, and its hard to compare them when they're playin different styles........

but this isnt best guitarist. that was an example. and i guarrantee u hendrix wasnt god at big band jazz/swing, pure classical, or heavy metal for that matter. even if he was the basis for heavy metal.
but Mitch Mitchel was pretty damned good at drums....i personally think he should be up on the list somewhere.......... |

No... Hendrix is easily the best guitarist ever. He never used a rhythm guitarist and he somehow accomplished the same sound, and if that doesn't make you smile, you best listen to any of the Experience's three excellent albums. He brought so many elements to his guitar, and he though he made his name showboating on it, he was a real compositional genius. There may have been faster players, there may have been more emotional players, but Hendrix really elevated guitar playing beyond the rudimentary basics. There have been so many people to draw their styles off him - Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer come to mind - but none of them, NONE of them could ever match his skill.

exactly. which is why its even harder to judge. technically speaking, Satch is better than Hendrix by MILES. however, Hendrix created and explored TONS of techniques and styles of phrasing that ended up influencing satch.
in the same way, Hendrix had an advantage over older guitarists who influenced him. and Buddy Guy had an advantage over even OLDER guitarists and so forth. everyone is just building up over what's already been done, and thus it becomes harder to say who is actually better and becomes a competetition in personal preference of style. Steve Vai is an AMAZING guitarist in terms of technical abilities and even creativity. i still dont like him as a guitarist at all. and tying that back to drumming, it really depends a LOT on style preference. I prefer Mitch Mitchel to Neil Peart, even tho typical lines of thought say that Neil Peart is the greatest drummer of all time. who's the best depends entirely on who does what YOU like best. but yea. i think Mitch Mitchel should be up there |
