Well first of all, your opinion does count. And I don't totally disagree with you in anyway. I like the alternative title you suggested "influential drummers". :D

I would put Ulrich in the same class with other drummers like Alex Van Halen, Tommy Lee, Dave Grohl, etc. Basically a hard hitting and solid drummer. A tight package none the less.

Perhaps i'm a little hard on lars due to the whole napster thing and that the sound of metallica has always rubbed me the wrong way (save maybe three or four songs). I've also seen some videos of him royally sucking balls. I should make a point of remembering that they started recording in the days when recording multiple takes was not only extremely time-consuming but also the only way to get a decent track... Meaning they couldn't quantize drum tracks to a digital grid, and he pulled those albums off quite well. I should give him some more respect despite the fact that i think he's a bit of a turd, and note that he's also getting up there in years which probably affects his skill level. I say all this because my first instinct was to respond by saying that he doesn't deserve to be grouped in with the drummers you listed, when perhaps he actually does.


EDIT: well, if this is rock and metal, i don't know how to properly classify zappa, but i think he definitely played some rock. Is there any way terry bozzio can get onto that list? He's crazy good.

Well it's all just a matter of personal preference toward the artist and bands that you personally prefer to listen to anyway, more so than an independent opinion when you get down to it in the end. :beer:

That's a tough list to choose from! I think you left out a couple of notables though:

1. DMB's Carter Beauford
2. Slipknot's Joey Jordison...you don't have to be a Slipknot fan to appreciate some of his side projects/solos

Billy Cobham definitely deserves some recognition.

I don't think he's been mentioned at all in this thread.

I remember seeing a Stewart Copeland interview, in which he said he could not play like Billy Cobham and then he played some examples!

In my opinion Chris Adler is one of the freshest Metal drummers! sick grooves, and smashing fills!

For me it's hard to look past Bonham based on the list of us.
