I always thought he was, especially when compared as a guitarist or lead vocalist (although his lead vocals aren't bad). He was also good as a backup vocalist with Nirvana. Most drummers that are in 3 piece bands have to be a little better than just average. It was the little things he did as a drummer to help fill Nirvana's sound verses being a technical drummer. A very hard hitting and solid rock drummer in my personal opinion. (There's always someone better though, no matter how good you are). I would never suggest that he was anything like Keith Moon as far as that goes.

If we're gonna say Grohl, I'd have to throw Murph in the contest from Dinosaur Jr. His style is dynamic and his fills are pretty sweet. J Mascis has even done some pretty good stuff on Green Mind. They're not the best, but in Alternative Rock they're probably a couple of the lead in talent.

Have you ever heard Songs For The Deaf? His drumming on that album is nothing short of amazing. It's a perfect example of a drummer being perfectly in tune with his music and capturing the moment. I would say he's definitely a GOOD drummer that's capable of being a GREAT drummer, given the right circumstances.

Ian Paice(Deep Purple) YouTube - ‪Deep Purple - The Mule‬‏ Keith Moon(The Who) YouTube - ‪Keith Moon´s drum kit explodes‬‏ Jon Bonham(Led Zeppelin) YouTube - ‪Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times (Studio Version - Best Quality)‬‏ Dont know who's best but these three aren't bad. Cant be arsed looking at random names that i've never heard of! If you're gonna have your say, at least put what band they're from.

John Bonham and Moon were both fantastic drummers.
One personal favourite is Charlie Watts of the Stones-I know he`s more of a jazz drummer, but as Jagger said on a live album, "Chawlie`s good tonight, innhe?"
Chawlie was good anytime I saw him play
