Most of their albums sound like unfinished jamming sessions with a lot of experimental stuff thrown in. The only album that could really be seen as being slick is the debut, and even then I don`t think of Eddie Vedder`s voice as being slick............its one of these muscle rock voices.

I blame the literature that insinuates they were first-tier as much as I blame the people putting them on a pedestal...

Have you guys heard Superunknown..? It's a masterpiece. Even their lesser albums (Down on the Upside and Badmotorfinger) have some amazing songs on them, and are overall quite consistent.
Hell, their first two albums have a couple gems. Oh, and Chris Cornell is incredible. For the hell of it: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana (Just did the "Seattle Four")

"Spoonman" is a good song, and has a really good guitar riff.
Either way, it also has "4th of July", "Like Suicide", "The Day I Tried to Live", "Black Hole Sun", "Superunknown", "Limo Wreck", and "Fell On Black Days". To name a few. Oh, and "Fresh Tendrils". Edit: And "Mailman".
