i don't think he gets nearly as much attention as he deserves. might not be underrated, but definitely underappreciated (just like the band).

as for the ongoing inanity about Bush and 'post-grunge' (sound or style). if Bush sounds 'post-grunge' then Nirvana was the first post-grunge band because they pretty much sounded identical until Bush started trying to mix in late 90s electronica into their sound.

Bush are often classified as post-grunge but as I`ve said before and you have reiterated above they brought nothing new to the grunge scene to classified as post anything. Bush were just an English version of Nirvana but inferior in every conceivable capacity.

The problem with Soundgarden is that they often come behind Nirvana, Pearl Jam and AIC when people give opinions of these bands.

In terms of quality I see it as follows:
Nirvana> Soundgarden> Stone Temple Pilots> Alice in Chains> Pearl Jam> Mudhoney.

The first three easily would make my all-time top thirty bands as well.

agreed on the absurdity of 'post-grunge' being associated to any band that started before Creed first hit the charts (you people want actual 'post' grunge there ya go!)

although as far as quality from the names i remember from that scene goes for me it's...

Soundgarden

Nirvana

Pearl Jam

Alice in Chains / Stone Temple Pilots

Bush / Collective Soul / Seven Mary Three / Days of the New etc.

i'll freely admit to being a huge SG fanboy back in the day though. hell i had one guitar specifically tuned (CGCGGE) and dedicated to playing only a small handful of their tunes.

I'll take Mudhoney over Pearl Jam and STP's slick radio-rock...

Listening to some Mudhoney right now. If I had to pick a band to define a particular grunge "sound" it would be them. Though if I had to reorder that list it would be

Soundgarden > Alice In Chains > Nirvana > Pearl Jam > Mudhoney > Stone Temple Pilots

Early Mudhoney with their Iggy Pop and the Stooges style proto punk influences were a very good band with plenty of attitude, but even by the first album proper they seemed to have the life sucked out of them and despite one or two decent albums ince its been largely downhill for Mark Arm and the gang.
