The problem with post-grunge seems to be that its too big an umbrella for all the groups that come under it. Foo Fighters, Candlebox, Bush, Everclear, Live, Creed and Staind amongst many others, have this label over them and like the Grunge groups of the day, are extremely diverse with the whole thing branching well out from Seattle etc especially in the case of Bush and Silverchair!!!

In the case of Smashing Pumpkins, I definately think there are grunge pretensions there but also a whole load of other stuff to put them firmly in the alt rock camp, but then again weren`t the grunge groups of the day considered a sub-genre of alt rock?

The revisionist claim on wiki doesn`t make it fact, but it does serve to give a guideline hindsight on what was going on in that period of music. Labels and a true critique of a genre, album or band often come much later anyway. For example, I`ve lost count over the years when looking at all-time greatest albums lists, where some of the albums on these lists were lambasted back when they came out and received poor reviews, point being here, that accurate assessment often come much later.

A similiar thing happened in the late 70`s with the punk explosion, and everything that came out with some attitude in it, was being called punk! It wasn`t until later that we had the post-punk and new-wave monikers etc to differentiate these bands came along.

For the record, I think the whole alternative label sucks as its just so general and just incorporates bands that don`t fit neatly into boxes.

I guess what I'm saying though is that Live are not from the right time period for the label to make any sense. Since post-grunge refers to the bands that came after grunge and that were influence by grunge, Live doesn't fit the bill. It's like calling Soul Asylum post grunge.

This I can definitely agree with. I though it was dumb then and I think it's dumb still. I at least made some kind sense in the late 80s and very early 90s when the bands it was applied to weren't platinum selling artists (since they were supposed to be an alternate to the mainstream) but once alternative became pop the term was an oxymoron.

Well I retracted the reference to Live on another post as being somewhat inaccurate, along with the post-grunge reference too.

Soundgarden are amazing, and Superunknown is an incredible album.

Down on the Upside and Badmotorfinger are also extremely good albums. Chris Cornell is a God.

Superunknown off the album Superunknown is my favorite song by them.

I like Pearl Jam more than them though..

When I think of post-grunge I think of Bush.

When I think of Nickelback I think of post-post-grunge...

See, I think post-grunge started with Bush, STP, etc.

Those guys you posted are influenced by the post-grunge bands themselves...

Stone Temple Pilots' debut came out in 92, that's a little too soon to be considered "post grunge", since grunge had just picked up.
