So I found something to offset our wonderful Korn, Seether, Muse and Dream Theater faced rock forum. NEW ELECTRIC WIZARD.

Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today [2007] « Drought

I like it. Hazey. It's fabulous. Psychedelic. It feels so good. Clinical.

The opening title track starts off with a bit of mild static before a solitary guitar moves in and it's not long before EW are playing one of their gorgeous jams. You're comfortable with the start they've made, let it be time for their trademark distant vocals to dawn over the horizon of the music. A great 8 minute opener.

Things pick up with track 2, Dunwich, the tempo is faster, it feels more concentrated than the opener, Witchcult Today, and it certainly sets up Satanic Rites of Drugula nicely. Which is a fucking killer tune by the way, even with the really cheesy song title haha!

It could be lazyness, or it could be a favour, but thats as far as my sampler review goes. Electric Wizard are by far and away one of the form bands of late and don't let anyone fool you, some metal is simply brilliant. These guys prove that.

Love the production on the new album. Just as heavy as anything else they've done (if not moreso), but in a completely different, less predictable way. Reminds me of Saint Vitus a bit. 'Cept way better.

The 2nd half of "I, Witchfinder" got me hooked. It's like a heavy-metal "Meddle". Their music is like taking a clear picture, putting it in Paint Shop, then blurring, skewing it, warping the hell out of it until you don't know what you just shot. There was something there, but you can't remember what it was. You hear noise, feedback, distortion on top of the song structure, which they do everything in their power to muck up.

The new record was really good, pretty retro. I was impressed.

My favourite record is probably Dopethrone but it could be a toss up between that and Come My Fanatics.

Come MY Fanatics is spacier and trippier which is definitely a good thing, but im not a fan of the drums on that record. Dopethrone is the more complete record, and We Hate You is an incredible track, but you cant beat a bit of Return Trip. That track makes me wanna be sick.

I know this is probably bs, but a friend of mine told me that Electric Wizard was only allowed into the states to tour for a certain amount of time because they had to many offenses with weed charges, is this true? I have noticed they don't come to the states often.

Dopethrone is my favorite as well. In a similar vein I also really like Sleep. Holy Mountain is wonderful.
