Barrett-era floyd were simply a mind-fuck, huge, psychedelic swirls and disorientating light shows- they were pioneers of the british psychedelic scene, and despite the fact a lot of barretts stuff was hippy rambling full of fantasy, gnomes, nursery ryhmes and acid-laden chaos, it struck a chord with the context of the time and theres certainly something very deep and meaningful about his work with floyd. songs from this phase of floyd:

post-barrett floyd saw gilmour and waters (one of the best guitarists and bassists britians ever produced) strike up a creative, volatile relationship which spawned barren, darker music that belonged more to the outer-reaches of the solar system then in your living room CD collection. some classic albums are wish you were here and the two i dont really need to mention.

7/4 and 7/8 are two of the most common time signatures in prog.


4/4 is great and all, but it always gets all the attention, so not fair for the other guys.

Chronic

Have A Cigar has to be Floyds most underrated song ever. Awesome lyrics, amazing synth, great guitar solo, so funky, but hardly ever get's a mention...and didn't even make it on to their best of.

Anyway I'd recommend Darkside of the Moon (Album), Wish You Were Here (Album) & Animals All great, Animals is perhaps the least accessible tho.

Not a huge fan of the Wall, but Comfortably Numb is awesome.

DSOTM is great and all, but Pink Floyd have so much other great material.
Ummagumma has a whole disk of solo projects from each member, and tracks like 'The Embryo' from the Atom Heart Mother era show how Barrett's influence was being replaced.
Also, most of their albums have been recently reissued onto CD, like Atom Heart, maybe Pulse, Delicate Sound of Thunder?, and Momentary Lapse of Reason. This is just off the top of my head, but they're out there.
