Les Paul is an idiot but he's right, if it were another band maybe, but You'd be hard pressed to not know all the members if you own all the albums (presuming the band has more than 4 albums). I own all of Tom Waits's studio albums, but he switches bands, so it assumed not many people know the bassist.
Conversly, I own all Metallica's albums, and I can name all four of their bassists. Maybe its the case where your not flooded with music like me, but Led Zeppelin...thats a hard sell. And Kashmir get my vote for best responce to a newb.
