I'm not saying that bands without great musicianship or deep, meaningful lyrics are bad, hell, Art Brut and Brakes (both bands written about by NME, both bands creating very catchy, pop/rock style music) released two of the best albums last year, but those other bands are playing that kind of music very badly.
