Ahhhh skaking.....My favorite form of dance. Every show I go to I have to break down into skaking. The best thing about skaking is that there is no wrong way to skank. Me, I like to put one hand behind my back and swing the other hand while im going around in the pit.
So what are some ways you guys skank? No wrong or right answer. Discuss. |

Wrong there is a wrong way to skank. And if your doing it at punk shows I have this strange fee;ling your doing it wrong. Flailing your arms and running in place isnt skanking. Its just flailing your arms and running in place.

Skanking is just dancing. It goes as far back as the original dance hall days where people would dance quite normally to the music, quite well but quite normally. It is not, as all-nite said, running in place & flailing your arms. Its also not what you do in a circle pit. Its just dancing, pure and simple.

Strangely enough, this is the first MB thread I've come across that's devoted to dance. Is that just me, or does MB under-represent dance ? Anyway, if you want to try legitimate skanking, you gotta learn some steps, I guess - otherwise, as someone said on page one, it's just dancing. ^ This sounds so much like the opposite of fun, but never having tried it I can't say for sure.

^The background music in the video isn't what I expected.
It reminds me of two things, one: the Pony, & two: how they use to dance in Ska bands. I am not sure when and where the term originated. But it seems it evolved and cross genres. Ben Carr from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones has been accused of "skanking," but I don't know if that is what they called it back in the 70s. In Ska, I guess it can range from the very subtle (like Ranking Roger) to more elaborate ways (like the whole Selecter band). The Mighty Mighty Bosstones always seem like a Two-tone revival band, and took everything they could from those bands, even their dance moves. I guess it takes America a decade and half to wake up to what's happening in the UK? nah j/k ("I kid, I am a kidder.") ^ This could possibly be the "Windmill."

Every time I glance at this thread I think of Skank.
