Check out Sly and Robbie solo stuff too. They are Reggaes equivalent to Motowns Funk brothers. They are drummer and bassist respectively. They also were the backing section for Black Uhuru (another great band).

Bob Marley is one of the greatest artists of all time, there's no question it's him. The rebel spirit/sadness of some of his songs is astounding, You usually don't notice these things until the second time around. Take "Buffalo Soldier" for instance. I didn't think much of it at first, but I listened to it again, and more closely, it's now one of my favorite Marley songs.
