Usually they use an "effects snare" which isn't as wide in diameter. most reggae and ska drummers have 2 snares, a regular one and an effects snare for those intense fills that usually proceed the chorus in most upbeat ska songs. There's also a piccolo snare which is shallower (not as high?) as a regular snare. also many reggae artists put their snare through a delay pedal for that trippy dub effect that makes ya' think someone sprayed som Eaid on yer' weed
