New Zealand Dub Music

New Zealand is home to many exceptional dub bands. I just thought I'd share a few with you that worth checking out:

The Black Seeds
Salmonella Dub
Kora
Fat Freddys Drop
Tiki Taane

Check them out they are all on youtube!

I adore Fat Freddy's Drop but I would not class them as dub personally as there are elemnts of Soul and Reggae in there. Salmonella Dub I have only just got into. The other names I am not familiar with but I will surely check them out.

I still have that FFD release lying around on my HD, mainly due to you advertising it all over the boards :p:. God, I always do this often! The same old 'not enough time' cliche. Need to give it a listen sometime.

I agree with you.

I have always wondered why Reggae has been so popular with the south pacific islanders such as the Māoris and the Samoans etc etc.

Island mentality? I know that seems a generalisation but Reggae is big over here too and of course bled into Dubstep. Our love can obviously be traced back to the 50's and the influx of Carribean workers after WW2. Did anything similar happen over there at all?

I'd say it's related to the marijuana use and relaxed beach lifestyle over here. Perhaps in the past some Maori have felt oppressed and sought solace in reggae?

Either way NZ's dub scene is good.

Certainly no relaxed beach life here

What about Bognor beach in the summer!?! Seemed OK to me:D

Maybe that is it, a mixture of either relaxed or repressed. Maybe Marley being iconic as well.
In Australia the indigenous population has seemingly hooked up to Country and taken a different direction.

Bognor is an absolute delight at any time of the year :D

what exactly classifies something as dub?
