Awesome ska bands

Crowned King, from Vancouver B.C. is such an awesome ska band. Well, their more punk than ska but they've got their brass instruments in there. Big D and the Kids Table is also another kewlio ska band.

I like Alton Ellis a lot, The Ethiopians, the Toasters, Streetlight Manifesto

punkrockprincess 06-29-2006 02:39 PM

I would probably say Catch 22 is my favorite 3rd wave ska band.

_Spinning_ 06-30-2006 12:39 AM

Streetlight Manifesto are great. Their remake of Keasby Nights wasn't all I was hoping for but good nonetheless.

Catch 22 Have a great sound.

Love Big D And The Kids Table (My Girlfriend's on Drugs - Kick Ass)

Mustard Plug

Reel Big Fish (Of Course)

So many others...Could go on for a long time...

Ska rocks my Socks...:D

Raine 06-30-2006 01:00 AM

Ska bands . . .
Mustard Plug
Mighty Mighty Boss Tones
Suicide Machines

Those are the only ones I listen to most often and like a lot. There are probably more. . .

Uglycasanova 06-30-2006 01:10 AM

Ya Reel Big Fish, The Specials, Big D, I want to say Less Than Jake, but theyr'e not ska anymore.

_Spinning_ 06-30-2006 01:44 AM

I_want_your_salvation13 08-27-2007 11:23 AM

BluesyRican 08-27-2007 07:32 PM

sorry i need to disagree here, crowned king is not a good band at all, even by ska band standards.

stakeraiser 10-10-2007 02:47 PM

check out The English Beat - I Just Can't Stop It - amazing album

jackhammer 10-10-2007 03:29 PM

I,m really digging THE FLAMING TSUNAMIS at the moment. Ska Hardcore Punk is the best description, they really are extraordinary. An acquired taste though. Some people may find them too schizophrenic.

rocknrollrat 12-11-2007 01:19 PM

Favourite ska bands?

djchameleon 12-12-2007 06:33 AM

I don't even know if I've heard 5 ska bands but I have a question is streetlight manifesto considered ska?

enemyat_thesix 12-12-2007 01:28 PM

most the bands mentioned in this thread are technically ska-punk, but that's basically what the term 'ska' has come to mean

1. Streetlight Manifesto
2. Reel Big Fish
3. Catch 22 (Alone In A Crowd/Keasbey Nights)
4. The Aquabats
5. Mad Caddies

jackhammer 12-12-2007 01:36 PM

^^^
Three out of my five are just plain ska. I was hesitant to put THE FLAMING TSUNAMIS as they only have elements of ska. I'm surprised you have put REEL BIG FISH as they are Ska by numbers. I also like:

Toyko Ska Paradise Orchestra.
New York Jazz Ska Ensemble.

cardboard adolescent 12-12-2007 01:46 PM

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra rock.

The album HIGH NUMBERS is cool as fúck. I Forgot the English band Capdown. Just a shame that Capdowns latest release is terrible, they have virtually dropped the ska from their act.

I'm listening to a band called The Fad at the moment. They have potential if they can stay away from trying to sound like every other Ska-Punk band on a few of the tracks.

yeah, all five on my list are ska-p

petarsubotic 12-13-2007 03:20 PM

1. The Slackers
2. Tim Armstrong (poets life) or [spunge]
3. The Toasters or Toots
4. Mustard Plug or Skankin' Pickle
5. Mad Caddies or Planet Smashers

Edit: I can simply not leave out The Suicide Machines...

petarsubotic 12-13-2007 03:53 PM

Hah, well everyone pretty much covered everything I wanted to say...
But let me see if I can pull out something not named:

[spunge] - Essential 3rd wave, youtube spunge roots

Common Rider

Vandals - they have some ska stuff

The Slackers - Why is no one saying slackers??? (homework, listen to "Wasted Days" and "Rude and Reckless")

The Planet Smashers
Mustard Plug
Can't Hang
The Holloways - Generator ( I have no idea how I found this)
The Clash - I still consider them somewhat skaish no matter what you might think.
eh... Sublime?
Slightly Stoopid
Slow Gherkin - good stuff
Ska-P
Save Ferris
Pepper
Patent Pending - more childish (check out "Cool Club")
No Doubt
NOFX
Mad Caddies
someone said Chockin' V. - mad props out to them, and let me add Leftover Crack and Morning Glory if I may...

jackhammer 12-13-2007 04:29 PM

--[spunge] - Essential 3rd wave, youtube spunge roots--

They are from Tewkesbury which is just a couple of miles from me. don't matter because they are pretty poor really.

Ska-P are OK. I forgot to mention SKA CUBANO. They do exactly what it says on the tin!

awaywego! 12-15-2007 07:54 PM

A Billion Ernies. They're screamo/ska but so good, imo of course.

Friday 12-18-2007 12:24 PM

1. The Specials
2. The Skatalites
3. Toots & The Maytals
4. The Selecter
5. Desmond Dekker

I'm mainly a two tone boy. Third wave doesn't appeal to me.

enemyat_thesix 12-19-2007 12:44 AM

i'm all about third wave, although i haven't heard much first- or second-wave

You really should listen to THE SPECIALS. A band that still sound as fresh and vital as they did over 25 years ago.

enemyat_thesix 12-19-2007 09:29 PM

i'll dl them right now
