ICP are also corny but they own it. To call them trash or unlistenable is just the trendy hip hop opinion people jump on.

If you don't think ICP has respect for hip hop you really don't know **** about ICP. If you think they don't have respect in hip hop you're living in the past. Interviewers are calling them hip hop legends now.

Plus, if you like Eminem then you have to respect the influence they and Esham had on his style change between Infinite and the Slim Shady EP. The whole Slim Shady gimmick was inspired by Detroit hip hop. Hell, the whole idea of Bonnie & Clyde (and Kim) was inspired by Twiztid's Murder Murder Murder because he heard it back when it was a House of Krazees song.

To echo Batlord, their story telling is their pinnacle. I'd say it's on par with Slick Rick.

I'm making the distinction for why I don't like groups like ICP. It's not cause they're corny or white. It's cause the music sounds ranges from God awful to underwhelming, imo.

I didn't even really listen to find out what the Kottonmouth Kings were talking about in that song you posted. It sounded bad so i turned it off after 45 seconds tops. It legit sounded like it was designed as an audio alternative to waterboarding.

They don't have respect in the hip hop world because they make terrible music and put zero effort into it. Anyone who considers them a hip hop legend deserves to be lynched.

They pretty clearly put hella effort into their music. They just have trashy aesthetics that sound bad to fake music fans. Like every time Shaggy speaks is the ugliest thing in all of music but he puts his all into it and it's glorious.

No. You have to work at it to actually learn how to rap like Eminem for instance. Even if you don't like him, you have to know that as an amateur you aren't going to be able to rap like that.

But it's not at all crazy to think you could rap like ICP.

And it's not like they have great production to make up for the lazy rapping.

They're just all around amateurish and ****.

I swear to god rap fans are the most artistically retarded music fans on the planet. Even metal is not so obsessed with having to play guitar real good to prove what a music person you are. It's like hip hop fans think a flow dick waving contest is the height of artistic achievement.

it's always been a genre obsessed with machismo and postering. If you can't appreciate that then it's simply not for you.

No... I'm not saying you have to have that sorta prowess to be good. But you have to have some thing. If you're not lyrical then fine. Maybe you have great production? Flow? Delivery? Etc. You have to have Something. They have nothing imo.

Production is actually their ace in the hole. Without their producer they'd have probably made the same album three times and then quit to get real jobs. And their other strengths for the most part are either not so easy to spot at a glance or are overshadowed by their shortcomings or perceived shortcomings.

Like, I'd say this is one of many perfect encapsulations of their storytelling ability. Violent J doesn't have a wide vocabulary and yet he uses his primitive locution to paint vivid pictures and tell an oddly meandering, nonsensical story that somehow expresses everything about the group effortlessly. It even showcases perfectly J's and Shaggy's chemistry in the most boneheaded (i.e. appropriate) way possible. There are simply no to rappers more born to rap together than Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope.

And yet it's all so cohesive that it's like spending an hour primping in front of a mirror to look like you just rolled out of bed. You just have to have a little imagination to see it.
