Well, it does loads for me. What would you suggest then?\
I personally would suggest Overcast, but that album is not for everyone. Sevens Travels seems to be the most common atmosphere favorite by people who have heard all their albums, so I would suggest that one. I do not think there is an album by them that I would really consider crap though(Even though I think negatively of God Loves Ugly, I still think it has some decent songs), so you can not really go wrong with them.

One thing I really dig about Atmosphere is the way they are evolving. Most hip hop acts evolve, and in my opinion it is usually in an undesirable way. Atmosphere may not move in the direction I would always wish them to go, but with each album they make, comes a more matured sound.

Their most recent album really shows this. Many long term fans don't dig it as much as prior works, but I think it is amongst the best, if not the best, post spawn album. The beats are far more melodic and complex than ever before. I have always thought prior albums to possess at least a few filler songs, but not here. Slug has taken a step up in his story telling style of rapping, producing maybe not what I would consider the greatest album in the history of Atmosphere, but the most solid without a doubt.
(Most recent being when life hands you lemons btw)

QFT
It annoys me that people don't like this album. But I really think that it's mostly just a victim of it's popularity. They're technically an undergound hip-hop group, and underground hip-hop fans are fickle.

Caleb48kb 12-01-2009 02:35 PM

Sevens Travels is my favorite album by far, I couldn't really get into much of their other stuff. I'm gonna check out Lucy Ford.

People who listen to underground hip-hop just because it is underground are douche bags. Good hip hop, is good hip hop. Much of it just happens to be underground.

pourmeanother 12-01-2009 04:29 PM

Very interesting- Seven's Travels, as a whole, has never resonated as strong with me. My favorite album is probably different every time I post it, but I can't say 7'sT has ever stood atop my list at any point.

Honestly 333, I think you really have to listen to all the albums to get the whole feel- each album seems a little different, and it's a very diverse discography. Ant's beats evolve to some different level on each album- from mellow, to heavy base, to piano based, and so on and so forth. If you've heard God Love's Ugly then I think next you have to pick up Lucy Ford.

EDIT: Temporarily celebrating another meaningless milestone. 400th post! I love whole numbers.

They're all downhill from here. I didn't do anything for my 500th post, and barely even remember my 600th.

jacklovezhimself 12-10-2009 09:56 PM

I started off with Lucy Ford, which for some reason gave me a great start. I don't know why exactly but I think familiarity to an album has a lot to do with how much I like the album later on. Lucy Ford stands out from any of his other albums because it's where I started with Atmosphere. However, they do all have their unique touches and they're all great.

Haha, I guess I've hit my peak.

By the way, I found a rapidshare account with every Sad Clown EP (even the hard to find early drops), 6 original Headshots tapes (which Headshots: Se7en pulled from), The Dynospectrum, rare releases (Sean Likes Ugly Girls discs 1-5), and more. Let me know if you're interested.

^Included in that mess is at least 3 of the BEST Atmosphere tracks that most people don't know of or have never heard: "God's Bathroom Floor", "Body Pillow", and "The River" (!!!).

Proud listener since 03, I picked up overcast from a local shop and didnt stop listening to it. Then i got more of his Cd's, and still havent stopped listening since

JesseB5446 01-14-2010 11:01 AM

My brother just turned me on to them. I like what I've heard, so far and Slug's a great lyricist. But I have to say that Smart Went Crazy is one of the most astounding flows I've ever heard.

&Steph. 01-19-2010 07:40 PM

A Song About a Friend is my favorite rap song. ever.

Serge_Gee 01-20-2010 08:00 AM

John Curtis 01-21-2010 09:45 AM

But yes, Atmosphere is really good. I'm actually not a huge fan, but they're icons of independent rap.

They're a group? I thought it was one rapper? Who does it consist of?

Like he said it's a duo of Slug (MC) and Ant (Producer). Also, early Atmosphere had another MC by the name of Spawn.

Phantom Limb 04-12-2010 04:22 PM

Slug is a really bad rapper and Ant has weak beats... in my opinion.

AlisonChains 04-12-2010 10:54 PM

he's pretty damn good and he has a huge following for not being that well-known.

Phantom Limb 04-15-2010 03:01 PM

Actually I would say he is pretty well known. Last year with his "when life gives you lemons..." he really blew up, but I'm not impressed. Just take a listen to Felt 3. While it isn't a totally worthless album, it really lacks lyrically.

True. Ever listened to anything before those two albums?

Phantom Limb 04-17-2010 12:20 PM

Yeah, I live in Minneapolis so I've known about Atmosphere for quite a while. I have God Loves Ugly, Lucy Ford, and one other that I can't remember. I just can't get into his storytelling, and none of the beats grab me. A lot of people like their style though. Its the same thing with POS and Brother Ali, I don't know if any of you have heard them, but their getting kinda big and i really can't see what everyone likes so much about them.

I'm not very big on Ali, but I like P.O.S.

Alright, then, you've heard enough Atmosphere to make a fair judgment. I think Slug's excellent, though. He's got a really smooth, black and white gangster movie styled character, and I love his delivery; he raps to you rather than at you. He's got a really diverse range of styles through his career, I don't think it'd be fair to call him bad at all.

New album The Family Sign out Tuesday.

I actually received the pre-ordered copy on my doorstep today- nice surprise.

I've been seeing a lot of hate for it- not necessarily for Slug, who is always consistent, but more for the production. Same old **** I hear with every new release, "they've changed so much they need to go back to their old style, Overcast was the **** Overcast > this" etc. I don't know- the live instrumentation is a little simplistic, but I think it sets a great mood for the album.

POS's producing talents are unmatched in Hip-Hop (imo), his lyrics are quite impressive as well.

But as far as the subject of this thread, Atmosphere is doing well although I've been pretty disappointed in the last two releases. When Life Gives You Lemons was the biggest let down for me.

James 04-13-2011 08:17 AM

Not enjoying the new album too much but it'll be better if I can find a lyrics sheet.

What do you think about To All My Friends/Blood Makes The Blade Holy?

Some of the tracks are pretty awesome but the thing that is pissing me off about this group is that they are stuck in a rut creatively and they are continuing to release music.

When Life Gives You Lemons.. to this newest release it doesn't seem like they have grown that much.

but i guess everyone has a plateau

they have been doing this for the last 3 releases.

it's getting quite boring to me.

That's fine, but this is the first full release that has been like this. To All My Friends is a double EP, and it was released within the past year- can't expect them to change their style very dramatically in that period of time... Plus EPs are generally a precursor to a similar stylistic album. WLGYLYPTSG and this are nothing alike, outside of the track 'Guarantees'. This isn't their strongest release, but I certainly don't hate it- nor find it boring.

Husky McDump 04-15-2011 08:17 AM

although im not the biggest fan of this newest cd

i reallllllly like this song:

djchameleon 05-06-2011 03:10 AM

I haven't listened to the latest album yet but I will now after seeing this video.

I love the Brother Ali cameo

The ending of that video is the best!
