I like Illmatic and agree that it is better than 100% of the mainstream shit that is out today. Why do we have to compare shit so much? Can't we just appreciate each for what it is?

Why you gotta go comparing Illmatic with mainstream shit? Just appreciate it for what it is.
Or... rate albums based on how much you like it and take all other abstract bullshit and throw them in the dumpster fire? |

Yeah, I didn't word that very well. You got me. I meant amongst all of the good stuff [non-mainstream bullshit that actually has merit] like Liquid Swords and Illmatic, one doesn't have to be better than the other. We should just be thankful that we have them. |
I mean, they only have merit to you and other people who think those albums have merit. Some people might love one and hate the other, love both or hate both because that's what they think. Music is so fabulous because it is absolutely subjective, unlike many other things. That's why we compare things, because you can't just say "Wasn't 90's Hip Hop awesome?" and leave it at that.
I happen to think Liquid Swords is better than Illmatic, but I've not listened to the former for a while now so maybe I may have changed my mind. |

Illmatic is a classic, but it's not very long and as far as I know it has never been remastered. A lot of early 90s east coast hip-hop I noticed could stand a little bit of a remaster, at least to make the bass sounds pop a little more. The Infamous by Mobb Deep and even 36 Chambers come to mind.
