Hip-Hop's "essential" listening...
what do y'all consider "essential" listening for a hip-hop head?
E.g., "They Reminisce Over You" by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth is something all hip-hop heads should not only have heard but, if they have a soul, enjoyed. List, and preferably link, your suggestion to this collection. I think we should put a poll with each recommendation a simple 2-option poll to vote yes or no as to whether we agree that it is essential listening. Depending on the level of involvement we can decide what percentage or minimum number of votes qualifies something as definitively-essential or not. What do y'all think? We could come up with a nice li'l list of good music and for some of us get exposure to stuff we haven't heard previously. Here's mine... |

Can't do individual polls unfortunately. You would have to make a new thread for every song.. There's too many damn essentials. Don't expect involvement, not many people discuss hiphop here unfortunately.
Here's a few: Spoiler for 4 tracks:

I also like SugaHill Gang's "8th Wonder" 'cause it really pioneered the way between hip-hop as a small cultural movement and breached the barrier to mainstream appeal. I also like this joint personally, it's gotta g-funk kinda sound. Gots mainstream appeal too. Another!! And another...these broke mainstream barriers but that was back when the golden era of hip-hop was flourishing. I also really like K7's "Come Baby Come" as the instrumental is a classic that gets sampled a lot! If you like b-boy electro/freestyle breaks. Peep this version of another classic, "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc, remixed by A'Gun a russian b-boy electro producer. P3@cE! Don't sweat if there ain't much participation in the hip-hop forums...maybe you gotta set the example. You've already put me onto a couple joints. You have a good ear for great melodies. how you get plugged into the hip-hop scene down under, yo'? I see you over there in Jersey...you a transplant from Australia or somethin'? |

Nope. I just dig through youtube on the regular searching for artists.. Stumbled on one aussy joint and explored all the related music.
I tried setting the example when I first joined too. It's active enough to check in but there's not much meaningful discussion. I just come to this section to exchange music. Here's a Brooklyn native who made a local NJ college town his stomping grounds.. Silent Knight Silent Knight- Bandcamp The Band Called Fuse- Bandcamp - this is more rock/soul crossed with hiphop.. cool stuff, check out "love and war in the city" This is off his first cd when he was still sellin albums outta backpacks at shows: Still Friends Newest track that I'm really loving: Walking Spoiler for MORE ESSENTIALS:
I'ma check out your tracks now.

I bet if we do a top 50 emcees list and break it out in top 10, top 20...fashioned by 10s, all the way to a list of 50 we could generate outside interest and garner some new participation. You know dang well we live in the google generation so it might get hits and generate site traffic.
We should bring out a list of nominees, gather from as many people as possible 'til we have at least a consensus of a respectable top 50 list and THEN start ranking them. Let the list be an evolution that can have an artist's rank change based on emerging discussion from the contributors??? I always have trouble fleshing out my top 10. There's so many dope artists out there to consider. But a good list with solid criteria should help. You ever mess with Last Emperor, man? That dude was a beast and I think he's so freakin' underrated. The story goes that Dre was gonna sign Emp but then went with Marshall instead. Banana nuts! |

Dang, Gina... It's like pullin' teeth from a crocodile. You're acting like a kid who just saw his puppy get hit by a car...who deflated your spirits? TELL ME! Who's the bad man who hurt you this way? I'm fetchin' my stick of correction!!! Time for some 1-man mob justice...is that a real thing? A 1-man mob? Then we're gonna go get the air pump from the garage and put some volume back in your spirit. It's cool, if you're not keen to the notion--no big deal. I just see you participating a lot. Maybe something constructive might could be interesting. |
