I can understand why somebody wouldn't be that impressed with Illmatic. It's only truly great draw is Nas' rapping ability, as the production is dated even for the time period (which doesn't really bother me that much), doesn't have the personality or originality of something produced by RZA or Dre, and in general just isn't that inspiring besides some notable standouts (such as "Life's a Bitch"). But it's still perfectly serviceable.

And Nas may have had more personality on later albums, but his vocal delivery is absolutely fantastic otherwise, and really elevates an album that by any other rapper might have just been one more drop in the bucket.

I think that's a fair assessment, he is a great lyricalist in terms of his rapping ability, but I feel for the most part Illmatic's beats and samples are well...kind of boring.

I don't really think Eminem is that special, or Jay-Z. I mean they've made a few good songs, but they really just aren't my type. I don't think Kanye West is exceptional either, but still with the mindset he's made a few good songs. I can't listen to any of Lil' Waynes music, it's horrendous in my opinion.

Jay Z hands down. He had one good album that I fully enjoyed. Drake is okay but doesn't deserve the massive internet hype machine that advertise his mixtapes and studio albums as the holy grail.

If anybody thinks that Tyler the Creator is overrated then they do not understand the idea of being overrated. Everybody that I have talked to hates his solo work and the odd future stuff he did. Big name publications have ripped his music to pieces. I do not see how he of all people is overrated. I on the other hand really enjoyed his music.
