Jay actually comes across very likable, energetic and passionate.
It's interesting to see him stripped back to just a microphone and a live band, he's someone who's hid behind the bling bling facade his whole career and to get him at a more humanized, intimate level actually gave me greater respect for him as an artist.
To discover he's actually a really able live performer and capable of being more than someone who hides behind a corporate image gave me a new perspective on Jay as an arist.
Was thinking it may change others' opinions about him, maybe not in terms of content, because Jay has had a few bad records, but as an artist. Maybe people might get an element of insight into why he's held in such high regard.

The record is also surprisingly cohesive and enjoyable, even if all you take from it is the Roots' instrumentation, which is really good. Hearing them with Jay as the vocalist, I'd take him over Black Thought. It just flows incredibly well, sounds quite refreshing and natural and just plays like two artists with mutual respect having a jam session in front of an appreciating audience.
You lost me at taking him over Black Thought. Jay Z is almost unintelligible to the ear. I find his rapping almost juvenile in a way and his flow is garbage. While I feel like i'm in the minority because I know hes a massive artist in the big picture i'm gonna take a pass on his live interpretation. I will say this you almost convinced me to watch it as someone just passing through, but i've never cared for him in any capacity. I tend to prefer studio recordings when it comes to rap, albeit being in person live takes rap to a completely different level.

So glad that so many people hate Jay-Z. I don't care if he has talent as a poet or whatever, his delivery is just so monotonous that I can't generate even the slightest amount of excitement over just about anything he does. It's like whatever effort he puts into his music, he completely ignores the concept of energy or emotion. It's like the rap version of listening to a boring professor drone on about who-the-the-****-cares-what.

This. I will never claim to have any grasp of flow complexity beyond a basic knowledge that Eminem can flow and the Insane Clown Posse can not, but the man has presence and personality that would make up for any theoretical deficiencies he might have, while producing songs that are diverse and engaging.

I sorta get the Jay-Z hate, but outside of Rolling Stone, and himself, who actually considers him a Top 5 candidate.
I was of the impression most respected his contributions but nobody claims that he's in contention for GOAT or anything.

You guys must concede he has contributed a lot to the industry, no?

I think eminem is obviously overrated as a songwriter or musician. He can certainly rap however. He's thematically limited and has never really had a good chorus since "won't the real slim shady please stand up" which i think was brilliant.

He's contributed a lot of garbage. Props?

I'm just not a fan but he's definitely put in his time. I feel like the entire time he's been around there's always been some artist or group getting more recognition. Idk, it's probably just my bias putting him lower than he actually is.

Define "contributed a lot to the industry". As in, rap in general, contributing to the commercialization of rap, "elevating" commercial rap? What?

Cause, to me he's done nothing more than allow mainstream hip hop to pretend that it's still relevant, since it can claim to include someone who isn't a pop star pretending to be a rapper (f.ex Soulja Boy). Yeah, in his earlier career he was a legitimate creative rapper I guess, even if I don't like him during any of his career, but these days, what is his worth?

I always feel I little despair when I hear people referring to Jay Z as an entrepreneur or mogul. He is certainly wealthy...for a black musician anyway. That isn't intended as racially biased, just honest. I am of the few who want to support tidal (or any alternative to spotify, really) but his status as a mogul I find laughable. Yes he smokes cigars, but I doubt his business sense.

I think history will bear out that Jay Z was over rated. He's smart though, he crafted the right image and like 50cent has turned himself into a multi millionaire through his various business ventures.

As for Eminem, he's the only white rapper that people give two squirts and a piss about, unless you count Everlast; artists like Brother Ali & Machine Gun Kelly can't hold a candle to him.

Anyways another artist who I think it slightly overrated is NAS, he's good, but I can't understand why Illmatic is often cited as the best rap album of all time, personally I think Mobb deep's The Infamous is better myself.
