Pretty sure he polarizes opinion, as many dislike him as like him, I don't think that's the definition of overrated.

As for who is actually overrated.

1. 2Pac: A better ambassador than he ever was rapper. How many people who consider this guy GOAT, are doing so because of his legacy and influence.
Fair enough, these can't be doubted and he's a real icon for the underprivileged black population (despite going to drama school) as well as hip-hop as a whole. He provided positive messages to not only the black population, but also single mothers, the unemployed and the otherwise oppressed.
He's not only an inspiration to many as an influential figure but he also helped legitimize hip-hop's gangster image with his feud with Biggie and subsequent(?) death. So there's many pros to point to, but how many of them are due to his actual music?

Aside from the inspiring messages within, his music wasn't particularly great or unique. Some of the hooks he used were atrocious, Brenda's Got a Baby is absolutely unlistenable to me.
As a rapper, his flow was decent, hardly anything to get excited over though. In terms of lyrical content, people may derive meaning or fulfillment from his songs, but the lyrics themselves by in large aren't articulate in and of itself.
And that's his gimmick, he's seen as the Jesus of rap. And like Jesus his teachings don't translate well outwith his environment, nor have they particularly stood the test of time on a musical level.
Listening back now, the production and rap content is very of its time and sounds woefully dated.
His songs were at times one dimensional, repetitive and borderline preachy.

Aside from this, I'm not sure he put out one wholly consistent project, be it mixtape or album.
Sure 2Pac has his moments, and I don't doubt his impact not just on hip hop but on pop culture and even on social history but as a rapper, the guy's nothing spectacular.

I initially had a hard time getting into 2 Pac. For me a lot of it had to do with being surrounded by a culture of high energy music growing up (Punk, techno, new wave, disco, heavy metal ect ect)

So when I first heard him, the groove was to slow for me, almost like doctor office music slow, lol (California Love aside)

Once I got into him however, the stuff was solid. 2Pac's music is deeply rooted in the slower sounds of R&B, so I don't think he's overated, his style is just coming from a different place than say the high energy sounds of N.W.A.

It's just my perspective, you don't have to agree with it.

I've met a lot of people who didn't like 2Pac at first, and initially thought it was his overall music, but once they got into his slow R&B style, their opinion changed, as did mine.

I really like his showmanship. Not really one for live albums, but this is second only behind Live at Folsom Prison for me.

Jay actually comes across very likable, energetic and passionate.
It's interesting to see him stripped back to just a microphone and a live band, he's someone who's hid behind the bling bling facade his whole career and to get him at a more humanized, intimate level actually gave me greater respect for him as an artist.
To discover he's actually a really able live performer and capable of being more than someone who hides behind a corporate image gave me a new perspective on Jay as an arist.
Was thinking it may change others' opinions about him, maybe not in terms of content, because Jay has had a few bad records, but as an artist. Maybe people might get an element of insight into why he's held in such high regard.

The record is also surprisingly cohesive and enjoyable, even if all you take from it is the Roots' instrumentation, which is really good. Hearing them with Jay as the vocalist, I'd take him over Black Thought. It just flows incredibly well, sounds quite refreshing and natural and just plays like two artists with mutual respect having a jam session in front of an appreciating audience.

Mac Miller, IMO.

Never got into the dude's music. Nothing is appealing about it. Not to say he's a bad rapper, but I really don't care what he has to say. Also his face is punchable as ****.

I honestly thought I'd hate OFWG after all the hype they've been getting and Tyler's solo stuff, but I saw an episode of Loiter Squad and they had some concert footage near the end. I really didn't hate it, might even look more into them later. Not overly impressive, but not too shabby either.

Nicki is the most over rated under taltened muscian ever..

Eminem isn't overrated imo
