well I am really loving Compton after my first couple listens. probably not as good as 2001 and possible The Chronic but really what is. I think kendricks features are better than anything he did on TPAB (sans king kunta) too.

album is a banger
i am a bit pleasantly surprised by this tbh we've been hearing about detox for like a decade... and i was pretty skeptical, thinking if detox ever did drop it might be disappointing... not that dre doesn't have the potential to make another comeback album, just that it's pretty unpredictable. he's been seemingly absent from the industry for the most part for quite a while, in terms of as a solo artist. and it's really hard to tell where an artist is going to be artistically after so much time... he might deviate into a completely different direction in an attempt to stay relevant but fail to connect. or he might just come with a mediocre rehashing of his old style and sound stale and outdated. i was a bit afraid the latter might happen. but he didn't really do either one. the album sounds modern and innovative, yet with hints of the old G funk style interwoven within. it's not G funk but it maintains that influence, the same way that G funk isn't P funk but maintained that connection. also... i know a lot of people prefer 2001, but to me the original chronic was miles ahead of 2001. and i love 2001. but the chronic was such an iconic album... it basically defined new subgenre of rap music. 2001 was an updated and modern (for 1999) version of that style... but it didn't offer much in the way of innovation. it more or less polished and perfected the G funk style in an accessible fashion. and it was a great album to listen to for that. but it didn't change the game. this new album sounds more innovative to me. not that it will be the kind of game changer that the chronic was, but it's definitely not the same old dre. |

What's this a soundtrack too? The new NWA movie? Or is it just Dre's way of being "artsy" like Kendrick with Good Kid labeling it a "Short film"?

Yeah JWB The Chronic is far better than 2001, I can't see how anyone would think 2001 was the better album of those two.
Tracks 1-9 are perfection, then it falls off a bit with that pointless interlude, then is back with a bang. Unreal production on that album. The beats on this new album are not as pots and pans as on 2001 as well. @Justthefacts yeah, but it's inspired by the film. |
