@ ninetales rap music and hip hip are one in the same. that's just semantics. i'm sure you've heard it used in that way before.

can you expand on the "grime has its roots in garage and dnb" part cause i've seen that said before sure but beyond drawing from different samples and making different sounding beats i really don't see the difference besides the fact that grime artists happen to be british.

Both have elements of all of them but I think the primary influences are the main difference.

If that makes any sense.

i see it as grime being a derivative of rap music really with the influence of the dancehall/dnb/garage/whateverthe**** showing up in the production. i'm just saying that rap is regional even in the states yet it only ever became a different genre in england

But the question is: is it music?

I'd say it was the opposite way around.
To me it's dancehall/dnb/garage/whateverthe**** that are the primary influences with a small hip hop influence.

well rap is just the vocal style of hip hop and grime. Besides that they aren't really similar. like you said the beats are completely different. if you take away the vocals of both they don't really sound alike.

really... i just don't see that. like the whole format of hip hop is basically just a guy rapping over a beat... thats what sets it aside from every other form of music. and that's basically what grime is they just derive their beats from different music like you said.

man if you take away the vocals 2 random rap songs from 2 different eras/regions/scenes wont sound alike either.

That's like saying Metal & Punk are the same thing because they both use distorted guitar riffs.
