What do you think about "rappers" attempting to sing?
I do not know much "rappers who sing" aside from Drake, Eminem, Wiz Khalifa and Kid Ink.
Drake : He has a beautiful and soothing R&B voice in my opinion, but his tone can be sometimes too dark and ugly. Come on, does he even try to hit falsetto notes??? Eminem : Quite a good singer in my opinion. I'm not a big fan but I really love the hook of his song "Space Bound". Great melody and I like the fact that it even has background vocals in falsetto too. The sad thing is, his voice seems always angry... The two rappers I just reviewed are the ones thzt should be labeled as singers. But the next two... Wiz Khalifa : Uuuuh.... He is decent in my opinion. I like his hook on "No Sleep" and his verse on "Or Nah". But there's something which REALLY irritates me is that his voice kind of bores me ://// Then most of the time it just seem kind of a pain to listen to it. Makes me want to say : Uuugh... why am I listening to this. Kid Ink : He has this melodic rapping style, which is nice in my opinion, but just like Wiz Khalifa most of the time he makes me sleepy and his voice irritates me. The autotune on "STFU" is horrible in my opinion. |
I think if they can actually sing that's awesome. Krizz Kaliko is the only artist that comes to mind.
I am skeptical about how good the people you mentioned actually are without studio editing. Sound engineers can make a cat's cry sound like a choir nowadays. |
I have absolutely no problem with the idea, but for whatever reason it tends to generally result in songs that I dislike.

Andre 3000 did a whole album of it and it was excellent.

I wanted to bring up Cee Lo as part of Goodie Mob but that stupid **** he said on Twitter. I can't support him anymore.

He said something along the lines of women that have been raped remember. So to him if the girl is unconscious then it isn't rape because she wouldn't remember.

The man likes to not credit hook singers. Bugs me to death. Bad puns aside, he actually did do all the singing on the masterpiece "Hailie's Song", which I thought was magnificent albeit he frequently hit between notes. |

Also, am I the only one here that doesn't think of all his songs as Hip-Hop songs? It's not like having rap means that the song is a Hip-Hop song. The instrumental track determines the song's genre too. Most of his songs are Alternative Rock in my opinion, but he can go to Pop also.

Don't really mind it. I think a good harmony is nice to break up most of the hard core lyrics that is abundant in hip hop now. Drake when he harmonizes and stays in his lane...non gangstar is really dope.

How did DMX end up in that mix of great artists? lol
Sounds like an amazing show, lucky you. |
I'm not against it i mean, music is music. If it's something i dislike, i just don't look into it.
For example, lots of people have said that ALL of Lil Wayne's music is garbage. I mean, after the first song, is there a reason ya keep going back for more listens? Lots of people here talk about how Rappers turn singers are horrible but it's like this.. If your not interested, move on. No need for spamming their youtube pages with insults they'll never care about. :D |

"Cuz I'm just Marshall Mathers/just a regular guy don't no why all the fuss about me/nobody ever gave a **** before all they did was doubt me/now everybody wanna run their mouth and take their best shot at me..."
Is that singing? If so, I guess it's ok sometimes. Oh, and Biz did a good job in the video above. At least I enjoyed it. |
i feel like they try to sing because harmonies sound good to the ears especially for hooks/chorus but it depend if they sound bad i would not recommend it but monotone is fine for average rapper anybody could do that.
