You are pretty much one of the only ones.

Most people are tired of fake gangsta tales and imagery from rappers that haven't banged a day in their life and just popping off at the mouth.

I've never had an expectation that musicians are or should be telling me their autobiography with their lyrics and am perfectly fine with people simply telling fictional tales, something with a very long history in music. And, yes, I still listen to gangsta rap sometimes. I like the way a lot of it sounds, and that's really my primary criteria for any music I listen to.

Rap is different though. It just seems weird when all the coming of age tales are gang related and they try to pass it off like that is really their life when it isn't. Authencity goes flying out the damn window.

It wasn't supposed to be a fictional tale. If it was then I don't mind that. Similar with Lupe Fiasco's The Cool storyline.

How is it different? It's a performance just like all other music is a performance. Sun-Ra claimed to be from another planet despite the fact that he was from Alabama. It doesn't make me like his music less.

I don't get how you don't see the difference between rapping about being from the streets and hood areas and doing things that they really aren't and someone being creative and saying they are from another planet.

What Sun-Ra does is clearly different.

Do you remember that movie CB4 where Chris Rock was shitting on most gangsta rappers that rhymed about a life they’d never lived? It's the same thing.

I haven't seen that movie in about 20 years. I think the only part I really remember was the black power song.

The stories that they are making up about life on the streets they are trying to pass off as autobiographical like they lived through it. It just comes off sounding super fake.

They aren't just rapping about fictional tales that's the difference.

Edit: also that example doesn't really mesh with what I'm talking about. People go into a Marty movie expecting fiction.
I know art doesn’t have to be real. An author has the right to write a fictional novel. He just has to say it’s a work of fiction. An actor can make a film, playing a role far from their real selves. We just know they’re acting. Gangsta rappers write lyrics as if it's part of their every day life and it isn't.

That is one of the reasons that people are over gangsta rap.
