Well it just comes down to there being two types of freestyles, the written ones and the ones that are off the top of the dome. I used to be a diehard purists like you and only give credence to off the top of the dome freestyles but over the years I've come to appreciate written freestyles just as much and I don't feel like one should be superior than the other when it comes to talking about freestyles.

...but that written category is literally not freestyle...

It's not even an issue of good or bad.

the term freestyle now includes writtens though, they have been done that way for so long that it's the norm.

Dude...

What's the point of using words if they have no meaning?

We should call that style charlatan freestyle, because those who use it are just people who want the cred of being good at freestyling without actually having a talent for it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using writtens, but you know, writtens aren't freestyling.

Do you not know that words end up adapting new meanings over time when they become colloquial?

The English language is fluid.

Saw that one coming. There's shifting language and there's words being used 100% incorrectly by people who are hopping onto freestyling because being known as a good freestyler is good publicity. This isn't a change in colloquial use of the word freestyle, this is people pretending to freestyle and rendering the concept of what makes a good freestyler meaningless.

People can easily tell the difference between a written and one that isn't written. So the whole concept of being known as a good freestyler for good publicity goes out the window.

People just need to come to terms with the fact that there are written freestyles and ones that aren't and judge them individually instead of lumping the two together.

At the end of the day they are still freestyles though.

I'm going to remember this next time someone says that hip hop isn't an ignorant genre. RIP individual thought.

Ja...no, that's just you doing mental gymnastics to stick with your original position. An excellent freestyler can make rhymes that sound like they took longer than Finnegan's Wake to write and someone can work for years on a written that sounds like a terrible freestyle.

Drop the word freestyle and just call it a written and I totally agree with you on judging things individually. But then again it's not even about that, just what you call it.

Same here... I was thinking about how much aggression there is in most rap music and I don't always like the negativity, I'm kind of afraid that it'll make me more aggressive, and I don't want that. Figured it would be good to expand my boundaries and listen to other genres!
