That is true.... however there are not a whole lot of rappers from that era that are really trying to step it up artistically. They are either passed their prime or care more about the radio hits than really being creative.

No, he's a rapper it's encoded in your dna to be braggadocios. He probably felt that there wasn't anything going on at the moment so he wanted to stir up stuff and it's not even that big of a deal.
LOL

All rappers are not like that lol If you are the best and if you are confident in your skill then you dont have to do that. If nobody hasnt attacked a rapper personally why are they trying to stir up unnessary drama that could possibly draw attention away from their music? When you have raw talent you shouldnt have to do things like that.

man, it's easy to slag K.Dot's growing ego but if any of us were in the same position where we were his combination of successful and talented, we'd probably do exactly the same.
If K.Dot knows he's better than trash like Wale he has every right to call him to task, I'd do it.

As for the guys that have responded, none of them have any name value apart from maybe BOB but he's wack so his opinion doesn't matter.

i agree to evven tho i said i didnt think he would do this. I rap for fun and if i ever made i to a high level somehow and was called one of the best I always said i would call out the trash like wale, drake etc and say they should step it up. I think its more surprising cus everyone is not so buddy buddy in hiphop

I love diss tracks and if this situation spurns an increase in them I'm all for it.

First off Id like to say I am new to this board. Seems like a really cool, chill board.

I love Kendrick's verse. Kendrick is taking hiphop back to its roots. Back to when Emcees use to battle for supremacy and TRY to be the best. HipHop was a battle ground not for the faint of heart. This isnt a diss, more of like... " Hey Im here. Im trying to be the best and Im better then you. Show ME what YOU got." I love it because all these other rappers are going to respond. Show off that lyrical warfare thats been missing for a long time now.

Whether you like the list of rappers he said or not... These guys are basically in the same lane as Kendrick. Same boat, all trying to make a name for themselves.

Dont take it as a diss to hiphop or these other guys. Its a competition! Let the lyrics do the talking.

Just my observation! I like a lot of the opinions you guys have on this topic.

Welcome to Music Banter J Zilla. Yeah, I think you're probably on the money there. Hip-hop more so than any other genre has always been a competition.
We all like to sound-off on who our favourite MC's are, who's the top 5, the GOAT, etc. You don't really see that with prog rock or jazz fans, etc.
It's an environment in which every rapper believes he is top 5 material and every rapper has the belief that they are the alpha male.

Kendrick's lines aren't any more far fetched than when Nas and Jay-Z decided to battle one another over who held the unofficial 'King of New York' title for example. It's just we haven't had a rapper (maybe with the exception of Kanye) who's come out in some time and said look, I'm the best, prove me wrong.
I think that's only going to enhance the scene as a whole, which has been really good in the last few years. It's the old cliché about tougher competition increasing every individuals efforts as they all vie for attention, for the limelight, for the right to be a Top 5 MC.
Kendrick is undoubtedly the hottest act in the hip-hop scene at the moment and if anyone had the right to say they were the best at the current time, it's him. I hope for diss tracks to ensue out the back of this, I know this isn't a diss per se, but you know what rappers are like they'll take personal shots at one another over less than this and for us sitting in the sidelines watching, that can only be a good thing.

I liked the verse; it had great energy. But the aftermath of it has been pretty incredible.

What are you even talking about? Name any rapper, even the most conscious one you can think of and I'll show you a track where he claims to be the best. A vast majority does it and there is nothing wrong with it.
