copyrights and how it works
So this is my first message on this sight and I don't even know if I'm doing this right but if wrong please hit me back with the low down so I can correct this.I've been writing rap and r-n-b music for a a long time now and never really thought of ever getting serious or doing anything major with my lyrics until about two years ago when I finally stepped into a home based studio and heard myself for the first time on a track and I really enjoyed it better yet, loved it and ever since then been going in hella hard and I'm thinking bout getting serious and now I'm convinced myself I have something to offer to the rap game I'm hella cautious on somebody taking my stuff and claiming it as theirs. So with little funds I have and many songs to protect I've been asking questions here and there on how to go about it on my broke budget and long story short a buddy of mine told me that,if I was to clearly write my lyrics to my songs down word for word in front of a witness (friend or family member) and sign it with both of our signatures and date it,put it in an envelope and mail it to myself from another location and once received to never open it that basically the post office just legally copyrights my lyrics for the cost or a postage stamp... So my question is can this be done to be legally done in a matter with no questions asked to say those lyrics are now copy written with all rights to me?????

almost but not quite.
You need to have the dated postmark on the same document you wrote the lyrics on. Putting it on a separate envelope proves nothing because you're going to need to show the lyrics, once it's opened (Which you will need to do if anything happens) there's no proof that your lyrics were sent in that envelope. But even then it's still contestable because you could have sent a blank piece of paper and dated that & wrote the lyrics on it at a later date. So both ways have downfalls. If your serious about people stealing your sh*t get a lawyer to tell you what you need to do properly and don't rely on hearsay from a bunch of strangers on a forum.
