Anyways albums have grown on me in time but it only took one agonizing listen for me to see that good kid, maad city wasn't for me and you'll never talk me into giving it a second go. It's a case-by-case thing.
Well yeah. But there are "first listen" reviews.
I saw one just yesterday.

True, there are. As long as they are named as such, there isn't really a problem. (even though "first listen" reviews are really stupid and pointless)

The problem comes when prof. reviewers review stuff after one or even two listens.

Why is that even a problem? they are professional reviewers and they know what to look for and what deserves pointing out. You don't need to listen to an album ad naseum to get certain things out of it.

Yeah...they went to review school!

Rob Sheffield loves this conversation right now.

All those years at review school have to count for something!

Sure they might be able to get certain things out of it, but there's no way they can properly judge the overall quality of an album with just one listen.

We will have to agree to disagree on that one. I feel like they can on just one listen gather enough information for a review. Only music fans like us on MB will listen to it repeatedly to get more out of it than on just one listen.

You're saying the majority of people (i.e. people NOT on MusicBanter) feel that they've experienced everything an album has to offer after only one listen? They don't think they'll get more out of it with more listens?

I know it's hard to believe but there are people that only listen to music casually. They pick out their favorite track or two then disregard the rest of the album.
