Chance The Rapper "Acid Rap" Album Discussion
Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap 1. Good Ass Intro (Feat. BJ The Chicago Kid) 2. Pusha Man (Feat. Nate Fox & Lili K) 3. Cocca Butta Kisses (Feat. Twista & Vic Mensa) 4. Juice 5. Lost (Feat. Noname Gypsy) 6. Everybody’s Something (Feat. BJ The Chicago Kid & Saba) 7. Interlude (That’s Love) 8. Favorite Song (Feat. Childish Gambino) 9. NaNa (Feat. Action Bronson) 10. Smoke Again (Feat. Ab-Soul) 11. Acid Rain 12. Chain Smoker 13. Good Ass Intro Just a few questions to get the discussion rolling, you don't have to answer them but if you want to go ahead. What do you feel are the standout tracks? Do you feel like the production compliments the lyrics well? Also which of the two do you prefer related to this album? Do you have any favorite features or would the album have been better without them in general or a specific one? Do you see yourself listening to this album again a few months from now? Have you heard any of this artist's other mixtapes/albums and do you feel like this album stands up to the same quality as the others?

What do you feel are the standout tracks?
1. Good Ass Intro (Feat. BJ The Chicago Kid) 2. Pusha Man (Feat. Nate Fox & Lili K) 3. Cocca Butta Kisses (Feat. Twista & Vic Mensa) 4. Juice 7. Interlude (That’s Love) 9. NaNa (Feat. Action Bronson) Do you feel like the production compliments the lyrics well? Also which of the two do you prefer related to this album? I think the production is pretty much perfect for the lyrics/rapper. Chilled out, hazy and up beat all at the same time. I personally think the instrumentals steal the show, even though I like most of the lyrics too. Do you have any favorite features or would the album have been better without them in general or a specific one? More direction in terms of lyrical theme. He should not only take you on an acid trip in terms of the sounds you are hearing, but there should also be some kind of downer / real life issues brought into play. Look at XXX by Danny Drown as an example. Do you see yourself listening to this album again a few months from now? Probably not. I have been riding it pretty hard lately and am probably done with it for a while. Have you heard any of this artist's other mixtapes/albums and do you feel like this album stands up to the same quality as the others? I have not heard a full tape but his #10Day tape (based on a few tracks) isn't anywhere near as good.

don't at all care for the rampant overbearing adlibs nor the nasal drone cadence. I can appreciate the acid jazz production but i feel like the drug culture nature of the record is all too contrived and kinda stuck in a post-high school immature mythos.
hooks like "neh neh neh neh neh neh neh" don't appeal to me. He is doing something original, though. |

The first three tracks are definitely my fave on this mixtape.
I also can't really stand his voice. The whole Lil Wayne mixed with Danny Brown sound to it gets grating really quickly. I've listened to it enough trying to see what other people see in it and I think that's enough to last me forever. I was even tempted to delete it from my collection and I rarely delete albums. Yes the whole "neh neh neh" thing was annoying as well. If I could get just the instrumentals from this mixtape it would make the experience of listening to it more pleasurable.

Cool, I wrote a review of it for my MB Journal(hint: I loved it), http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ml#post1324573
but yeah What do you feel are the standout tracks? Most of the them imo except Acid Rain, Smoke Again, and Chain Smoke. Not bad tracks themselves, but there are some really standout tracks on here to me Do you feel like the production compliments the lyrics well? Also which of the two do you prefer related to this album? Yes I do, especially in the more intimate/personal moments on here. I prefer Chance's singing/rapping to the production, but the production comes at a very close second. Chance has some really good lyrics and wordplay if you pay attention, and the way he randomly starts singing some verses is really cool to me. Do you have any favorite features or would the album have been better without them in general or a specific one? I wasn't too big on Ab Soul's feature, I can barely remember it if anything and I usually tune it out. My favorites have to be Action Bronson and Twista though. Do you see yourself listening to this album again a few months from now? Well I've been listening to this mixtape for the past few weeks straight so hopefully yeah, maybe even years from now Have you heard any of this artist's other mixtapes/albums and do you feel like this album stands up to the same quality as the others? I heard the 10 Day Mixtape after this, and I can definitely say that AR is definitely the better of the two. 10 day has some excellent tracks on it though(Brain Cells, U Got Me F**ked Up, Prom Night, Hey Ma) but I definitely feel that Acid Rap is a more cohesive experience

I can honestly say I do not dislike one song from this mixtape. There are weaker ones like Acid Rain and Coco Butter Kisses but even those are good and I'll happily listen to them.
My top tracks: Chain Smoke, Smoke Again, Juice and the hidden track on Pusha Man; Paranoia. |

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this album when I first got it, I first heard him as a guest on They Don't Like Me by Childish Gambino but that song and his verse on it didn't grab me so I forgot about him for a few months after that. However, I saw that Acid Rap was getting some good reviews, so I decided to pick it up. The production is the star of this album, really well done instrumentals with influences from a lot of different genres, but especially acid jazz. Stand out tracks for me are: Good Ass Intro, Favorite Song, Cocoa Butter Kisses, NaNa and Everything's Good (Good Ass Outro). It's a great overall album.

Acid Rap's pretty cool but I feel like Chance is Danny Brown's annoying little brother who's just discovered recreational drugs.
The production's pretty cool, not overbearing or full in your face but pleasant enough to back up the vocals. I like the jazzier beats. I dig the jumping from left to right speaker, at one point Chance drills his voice from ear to ear with his 'nananananaing' pretty cool shit. Chance's rhymes aren't exactly complex and he's a little bit over the place at times as if he's trying to hard to harness Lil Wayne & Danny Brown, two of his obvious influences. But I dig his mix of half-singing and laid back rhymes. He injects a lot of his personality into his verses. Stopping for laughs, adding annotation and changing his voice for certain words/lines i.e. the way he says nigga is more like Nick Ha. I dunno, I sorta like that. I can see how this album may get quite grating over time though so I don't see me playing it in too heavy rotation but I'll defo be listening again. P.S. Did anyone else find the ending to be really abrupt and sudden? |
