The first RTJ album's production sounded like Cancer 4 Cure cast offs. It's even alluded to on some of the tracks.
Interesting. Makes sense.
This new track sound structurally like a simpler, more repetitive, "get it" to me. Also Zack de la rocha appears to be the only noticeable guest spot on the record, which is also disappointing. El-P records always have some great inputs from other artists, whether cage, aesop rock, to Trent Reznor, Mars Volta, Mr.lif and recently on C4C exxquire and despot. Killer Mike is so hit and miss, that elegance of an african elephant line is cringe inducing, but some of his other stuff is okay |
Meow the Jewels is happening.
^ I need it. I am ready.
That's clearly just a re-hash of the Stay Down beat. |
Meow the Jewels bitches

These guys I tell ya...
Run The Jewels 2 leak: El-P and Killer Mike offer free download ahead of release date |
About halfway through RTJ2. I think I like it better than the first one, but we'll see if that holds up over time.
Just started it. Hyped as hell.
It's alright. Completely in line from what I've come to expect from RTJ. Jeopardy immediately stood out as my favourite track. Might be because the beat reminded me a bit of All I Need by Radiohead and Roygbiv by Boards of Canada. Just loved everything El-P added into it as the song went on though. I liked the beats on All My Life (bad hook though) and Love Again (horrible feature though). Come to think of it I thought almost all of the features on this album were pretty bad.
Sparky's post at the top of the page sort of sums up my thoughts on RTJ, even after this album. Still a solid listen, but I don't know how long I'll be listening to it for. |
I'm not a huge fan but I do enjoy some of their stuff. However, why the hell are you guys excited to hear beats made from cat noises? I'm interested to see how it turns out but I don't expect to enjoy it.

I'm pumped for the collab with Zack de la Rocha.

RTJ2 >>>
9/10 album for me. Oh My Darling Don't Cry and Angel Duster are quality. |
RTJ2 starts out really strong, but kind of loses it for me in the latter half. Obviously both rappers have established themselves among the best rhymers in the game, but killer mike's flow on a couple of the new tracks (jeopardy, blockbuster night part 1) is god-level
Lie, Cheat, Steal is an absolute banger too. I definitely think it's better than the debut, they've really solidified their sound with this one.

Just got RTJ2 the other week and it's amazing man I love it and I can't get enough near 10 for me it's just so well put together in beats, lyrics/rhymes, and just kickass songs overall.
This really is some of the best hip hop there is for me. Maybe even THE best.

It's not close to EL-P's solo stuff. But I'd listen to it over Mike's albums.
I think the new album might be a step back for RTJ.
Don't get me wrong, it sounds great. El-P has done a fantastic stuff with the production on the record. The instrumentals are varied and they feel important, it's a pity the content of the rapping irks me. So much is made of this challenging race and discrimination of blacks. A few reviews I've read point to the storytelling and gritty nature of exposing the seedy underbelly of how the race is treated, yet El-P is a white middle aged man and isn't the best candidate to give me a lecture on it. I was also put off by the song where the two; one a ginger 40 year old and the other an obese Southerner talk about their alleged libido. For supposed intellectual rappers, it's a rather strange topic to base a song off. Most artists would get slaughtered for releasing a song like Love Again yet Mike and El-P get away with it because they're internet darlings. Maybe I'm nitpicking but they alter my ability to fully enjoy this album and at this stage I prefer their debut. |
I think Love Again isn't attacked so much because Gangsta Boo's verse turns the whole idea on its head and kind of satirizes it, RTJ's verses on that track sets that up. I do agree that the rhymes don't live up to El and Mike's potential, but it's definitely the best from RTJ so far.
Did anyone buy this album in physical format? I want to but I don't really want a cardboard case (same for RTJ1 as well).
Anyway still bumping this. Top 5 AOTY for Tekkers  |
RTJ3 confirmed btw.
Howard? Wtf?
RTJ2 is a cool fast paced hip-hop record.
So is RTJ3 coming? Or is that just a rumor? Because if it's true then time to get really excited. Although Meow The Jewels sounds great as well.
I think they should take it slow. EL-P usually takes his time making records. This amount of productivity is unprecedented on his part. Though I won't complain if he thinks he's making the best record possible.
I'm fine with that, but nevertheless I'm really anticipating RTJ3.
Meow?

Anyone else see the Close Your Eyes (And Count to ****) video? I thought it was pretty stupid in all honesty. Why doesn't the black dude just run when the cop's down? I especially hated the parts where they just lay down in between fighting bouts while panting like they're having marathon sex or something.
